Good God, that's terrible! I wonder who it was. I always wonder about these murder-suicides, why they compelled to take other people down with them. Sad.
There are exceptions, but most fall into three categories.
People who figure that if we can't live together, neither of us ought to live at all. A lot of these people end up not having the guts to go through with the suicide part of the murder-suicide.
People who murder their partner or their child in a mad rage, then figure suicide is the least bad option they have left available.
And what they call 'extended suicide', where taking that other person with you is just considered the right and natural thing to do by the suicidal person. Most common in mothers with small children, though fathers and spouses can do it too. Often "how can they live without me anyways" enters into the calculation, sometimes "can't let my still-husband have them" does.
