I really do apologize that I wasn't able to spare you the trouble of "revising" this law Wink

I ask unanimous consent that "parental" be changed to "parental/guardian".  After that, are we ready to vote?

I support the change from "parental" to "parental/guardian" and would be ready for a final vote after that alteration is made.

Seeing no objection, the amendment is agreed to.  I'll give this until the morning and then bring it to a final vote.  So get your amendments in now people... last call.

I hate to be a nag, but today is a regional holiday, and official business cannot be conducted until the 26th. :/

I've struggled a lot with this decision. I strongly support repealing the current statute which is far too restrictive. But the debate over this bill has been disappointing, and we are left with a bill that is watered down and contains some provisions that I am strongly against, such as parental consent for minors. I believe that this bill would be an improvement over the status quo, but I cannot in good conscience support it. When The People elected an overwhelmingly pro-choice assembly, they expected better than this. I would rather take up this bill again in a new assembly. For these reasons I vote,

I'm sure abortion wasn't the only issue The People had in mind when voting, DRJ, and even still, you guys got to a veto-proof majority because of better voting strategies. Look back through who voted, and you'll see about 60% are moderate-liberal and 40% are conservative, which would be only 3 of 5 seats.

Yes, let's take it up in a new Assembly. Great idea!

This bill is the best that can actually pass and definitely survive a challenge at the ballot box.  Also, a new Assembly will likely produce a more watered-down bill, not a more progressive one.  I am not thrilled with it either, but I'd urge you to reconsider.  Half a loaf is better than no bread!

I agree with this. I too would support a total repeal of the bill, but this the best we are going to get.

I would be willing to switch my vote if "parental consent" were changed to "parental notification". I would say that is an acceptable compromise.

Voting is now closed.  The AYEs are 3, and the NAYs are 2.  The AYEs have it, and the bill has passed.  The bill is now passed onto the Governor for his signature or veto.

Does this mean consensus is to forego the debate period?  That's fine with me... I just don't want to jump to something too soon.

Before we put this bill up for another vote, why don't we wait to hear the Governor's suggested amendment/reasoning behind the veto?

That's fine with me, but keep in mind that any vote we hold on this bill can only be to override the veto.  Any new changes would have to be introduced as a new bill.

Sure. In order to attain my signature, it would have to at least be the start of the second trimester, and I'd also like increased fines.

I can't do that. We gave up too much already on this bill only to have it vetoed. Very frustrating.
