Hi,

Is there any news about vote counting? CNN is stuck at the same results since wednesday, and I don't know if it's because nothing has come or because they stopped updating. All other sites have stopped too.

I think today is the day they start counting provisionals in Ohio... Do we have any idea of how they're going so far? I'm really hoping for an increase in Obama's margin there.

Also, I was wondering if there is any up-to-date estimate of how many ballots are left to count in each State, generally speaking. I just have no idea how many votes have yet to come in.

Dave Wasserman is keep track here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AjYj9mXElO_QdHpla01oWE1jOFZRbnhJZkZpVFNKeVE#gid=0

He's not counting third party votes though, for some reason, which is a little annoying and mean's the percentages are just of the two-party vote, not the total vote.

Thank you Lief, that's an awesome link! Cheesy

Assuming that the share of third-party vote doesn't change from its current level on Leip's Atlas (1.63), that means Obama is at 50.74% and Romney at 47.63%. Soo...

1) Obama got a higher percentage than Bush'04.

2) The margin is now over 3 points.

3) Romney's percentage is veeery close to dropping under 47.5%. Could Cuyahoga County's ballots push him under than line? The symbolism would be so PER-FECT.

Ohio gets to start counting Monday.

California still has 800,000 to a million votes to count even above David Wasserman's numbers,  with 340,000 in LA county alone.  It's likely that Romney will go below 47.5.

Why on Earth is vote counting so difficult?

Why on Earth is vote counting so difficult?

I'm pretty sympathetic to the popular vote advocates, but considering that the election has been over for nearly two weeks and there are still literally millions of ballots that have to be counted makes a pretty strong case for the importance of the electoral college.

Or just have good election laws and learn how to count votes. Guess I'm too demanding Sad

Even under a popular vote system, the election would have been called for Obama on election night. Not sure why you find this a case for the electoral college.

Quite the contrary, the Electoral College increases the probability of a dispute. It's far more likely that 1 or 2 states are enough to make up the difference between winning and losing the EC....than that the popular vote is close enough to be in doubt for very long.

I'm keeping an up-to-date tally of the latest voting returns on this spreadsheet:

ht tps://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0At91c3wX1Wu5dFp2dUlkNWlJeGN5NFUxa0F3cXpoLXc#gid=0

(I'm also updating Wikipedia with the latest data).

Unfortunately most of the networks have stopped updating their data.

I'm using the official state election websites for most of the data, which I link to on the right-hand side of the spreadsheet.

What's the black boxes over the states? And will you notify us (by coloring a box in some way, shape, or form) when each state certifies their numbers?

Back during the Florida 2000 fiasco, all counties were required to certify their results by one week after the election. Is this no longer the case in FL, or has FL completed its counting? And if FL could do this with the technology of 12 years ago, why can't every state do this now?

America is definitely a Banana Republic when it comes to counting votes...

I still find it hilarious how the final results in Brazil were known by election night.

Anyways, Romney's about to overtake McCain (59933K to 59948K) and the raw margin is about to reach 4 million votes. Smiley

Oh, and Obama has a higher % than Dubya. Cheesy

With the final CA vote, AZ and OH vote, the president's margin is becoming more and more significant and the margin in AZ continues to shrink.

It's probably taking so long because the election was so boring.

Looks like Maryland is done and Obama picked up enough votes to push him over the 64 million mark (per DW spreadsheet)  Also, Maryland became the fifth state where Obama's share of the vote increase over 2008.

Not much vote counting in CA yesterday, but Riverside county flipped to red by 4000 votes with 33000 left to count.
