I can think of worse people the GOP could select in 2016.  I can also think of worse.  Still I doubt the GOP will be able to get rid of their "if only a real conservative" meme until they nominate a real conservative who will articulately and intelligently present the conservative cause.

Who came in second after Bob Dole in 1996? Who ever it was, he didn't get the nomination in 2000; Republicans that year went with a winner and brand name; my guess is that the GOP will be infused with a dose of overdue pragmatism, and will opt for either Jeb Bush or perhaps Jon Huntsman - he did make a short run for GOP nomination in 2012.

But the most likely situation is that he starts out with about ten percent in the polls, which slowly declines as primary voters start selecting more acceptable alternatives.

In the 2012 primary, Pawlenty, Cain, Bachmann, Perry and Gingrich had to collapse before the Anyone but Romney crowd went for Santorum.

In 2016, it's likely that we're going to have conservative candidates with more acceptable resumes. I can't see many primary voters choosing Santorum over Rubio or Jindal.

An electoral ass-kicking, which we would have if there was a candidate opposed to contraception in general, would encourage the party to go for someone more acceptable to the rest of the nation.

The evangelical vote is a huge part of the GOP base and he will have that wrapped up for the primaries. While the rest of the field tries to be 'New Republicans' who try to show how they can appeal to a broader coalition, Santorum can go full on old school and attract conservatives who reject the notion that the party needs to change its image.  I think he will be a big player and potentially a front-runner early on

I just don't see why anyone would choose him over Jindal or Rubio. He was a last resort this time around, and I can't imagine people choosing him over other solid conservatives next time around.
