Never to early to talk about 2016!
Inside sources close to Rick Santorum are saying the former Pennsylvania senator and 2012 GOP contender is already organizing for a run in 2016. On the other side of the aisle.

Oh, I hope not.  He is a horrible candidate at the national level.

Republicans tend to pick the guy who came in second place the cycle beforehand. Rick Santorum came in second this cycle. Be afraid Republicans. Be very afraid.

Democrats, no need to worry.

I can think of worse people the GOP could select in 2016.  I can also think of worse.  Still I doubt the GOP will be able to get rid of their "if only a real conservative" meme until they nominate a real conservative who will articulately and intelligently present the conservative cause.

Now all we have to do is wait for Paul Ryan to take the plunge...

He seriously needs to change up his strategy if he wants to have a shot. He ended up getting way too side-tracked by social issues last time and abandoned his economic message.

I like you Rick, but you were only good to me as a protest vote against Romney in the primaries. It's time to fade into the sunset.

To be fair, it was awful hard to hear him over the loudness of his sweater vests.

Who came in second after Bob Dole in 1996? Who ever it was, he didn't get the nomination in 2000; Republicans that year went with a winner and brand name; my guess is that the GOP will be infused with a dose of overdue pragmatism, and will opt for either Jeb Bush or perhaps Jon Huntsman - he did make a short run for GOP nomination in 2012.

He has a small chance of being the nominee.

But the most likely situation is that he starts out with about ten percent in the polls, which slowly declines as primary voters start selecting more acceptable alternatives.

In the 2012 primary, Pawlenty, Cain, Bachmann, Perry and Gingrich had to collapse before the Anyone but Romney crowd went for Santorum.

In 2016, it's likely that we're going to have conservative candidates with more acceptable resumes. I can't see many primary voters choosing Santorum over Rubio or Jindal.

I don't know about that.

The GOP won four years after they went Goldwater.
The Democrats won four years after they picked McGovern.

An electoral ass-kicking, which we would have if there was a candidate opposed to contraception in general, would encourage the party to go for someone more acceptable to the rest of the nation.

The evangelical vote is a huge part of the GOP base and he will have that wrapped up for the primaries. While the rest of the field tries to be 'New Republicans' who try to show how they can appeal to a broader coalition, Santorum can go full on old school and attract conservatives who reject the notion that the party needs to change its image.  I think he will be a big player and potentially a front-runner early on

I just don't see why anyone would choose him over Jindal or Rubio. He was a last resort this time around, and I can't imagine people choosing him over other solid conservatives next time around.

He has no chance. He'll drop out during the Ames Iowa Straw Poll, otherwise he embarrasses himself for good.
