Romney getting less votes than McCain seems pretty perplexing.

The more I think about it, I'm going out on a limb and voting option 4.   I think there is a significant chunk of GOP base voters who are active duty or veterans who vote primarily on defense-related issues.   There was also many reports of absentee ballots from overseas military were sharply down from 2008.   Obama also received much more in donations from the military than Romney.  A Dem getting more $$ from DoD employees than the GOP candidate....has this ever happend before?

What do you think?

5-6 million votes are still left to count.

There's a good chance Romney will end up with more votes than McCain.

McCain deserved to get more votes than Romney. But I don't think he did.

The economy is better than it was in Nov  2008 and so overall turnout is lower this time.

Assuming your premise is correct, your options are not mutually exclusive. Overall turnout was up in 2008 was up for a number of reasons, most obviously, the economic crisis and the first black major candidate.

He pissed of the libertarians/tea partiers and the fundies.  All he had left was rich white folk, racists, and Obama haters.  But he got 3/4 of the vote in Utah!  Yay Romney!

Romney didn't win the support of safe red states in the primaries and he really didn't have to go get votes from those states.

In the states that McCain won more votes than Romney, giving Romney the McCain total doesn't move a single state from Obama to Romney

This.

Most states don't certify their results until after Thanksgiving. Let's wait a few more weeks and be absolutely sure before we make these sorts of claims. It's kind of doubtful turnout was really down that much.

I think Romney will end up with more votes than McCain when all the votes are counted.

I couldn't find an simple spreadsheet with the results so I've done one myself on GoogleSpreadsheets.

I'm updating it with new information on a regular basis:

I voted "There was no veteran on the GOP ticket" because I think it's an interesting option. "Many of McCain's voters...simply died" made me laugh though, probably because in my mind I immediately saw his turtle arms.

Romney almost certainly has 2 or 3 million more votes than McCain, perhaps as Many as W Bush got in 2004.
