I was recently given access to quite a few different war records (photos, postcards cap badges etc) by my gran mostly about my great grandad and his two brothers (RFC but not a pilot, royal engineers and unknown, who all survived) but also about my great great uncle, who was with the gordon highlands. In fact the only thing we have from him is a field postcard sent saying "I got your letter and I am fine", just 7 weeks before he was shot by a machine gun. For something that happened nearly 100 years ago with no veterans still alive from it was incredibly moving. I get the feeling that the great war will always be moving though, due to the paper trail and the sheer numbers, so almost any family has a casualty.
