I would -- my guess is that if FDR had run in the late 20th/early 21st century his disability would have worked against him.

A disabled president might be seen as weak by the world.  For that reason, I wouldn't support them in a primary.

Depends on the disability. Some would make him unable to do his job, others would have little or no effect on that. FDR, while I despise his domestic policies, did his job regardless of his disabilities - he ran the war pretty well, actually.

If someone today was crippled like FDR, it would be nothing like when FDR was president.  Everyone would know he was disabled, and that would make him seem weak to people or seem not fit to be president.

An analogy:
You don't wear a t-shirt and jeans to a prom, so why do you present a weak looking person to the world.

You mean people didn't know FDR was crippled? So, um... when did they find out?

No, the media covered it up.  Find a video of the Pearl Harbor speech.  You can't see the wheelchair.

Correct. But, as I said, my opinion depends on whether or not the disability actually affects his ability to do the job.

Why would the media cover it up? You'd think it'd sell papers.

When did people find out he was crippled?

Because they didn't want to tarnish FDR's reputation especially during the war. Back then when America went to war the media and America as a whole threw out all other arguments and partisan bickering and supported the President and the war.

Yeah, the media operated differently then. They covered up the affairs of many presidents too.

FDR served two full terms before America joined World War II.

Again, when did people find out he was crippled?

No.  A president with Alzheimer's is bad.

It depends on the disability.

Unless it meant he could not do his job, no.

I don't care if we "look weak." The point is if we are weak. Since when do Republicans care what the rest of the world sees us as, after all? Months ago, conservatives were arguing that we should try to piss off the world as much as possible.

It gradually became knowledge.  I don't believe the public ever knew about it during his lifetime.

There are only a handful of photos of FDR in his wheelchair.

The media wasn't designed to slander politicians back then.  For example, no one reported JFK's adultery.

Yes, Reagan is a good example.  Obviously FDR's condition did his abilities no harm.  Bush's handicaps, however, are a probably the most dangerous of all.

It depends on the disability.

Unless it meant he could not do his job, no.

My implication was that the disability did not prevent them from doing their job.

That said, disabilities such as schizophrenia or dementia are not implied in this question.
