Of course, since he's on a local paper, he can comment on local stuff here as well.  Here's one from just before the 2002 election commenting on Strom's upcoming retirement.

It's not my favorite Thurmond cartoon of Ariail's tho, but that one dates from the 1996 campaign and isn't on the web. It had Thurmod in front of a Thurmond '96 sign crossing out the '96 and replacing it with 92 saying I'm only 92 years old, not 96.

Here's a nice little visual pun of his, also from 2002.

I'll let this one be the last in my introduction and do some more later, once people have had a chance to look at these.

He was a man of his times, but his career was so long, he had a lot of different times.  His major fault was that he stayed too long in the Senate.  He really should have retired in 1996 or maybe even 1990, but if he had run in 2002, he would have won, and I probably would have voted for him.

What about his presidential run?

Hard to say, as I wasn't even alive then, much less of voting age.  In any case, assuming I was voting in the state my parents then resided, Thurmond wasn't on the ballot in Maryland, so I probably would have voted Dewey and been glad that Thurmond was splitting the Democrats,

My father was stationed at Ft. Meade and met my mother, who was from Baltimore, at a USO club. He left the Army in 1948 so that he wouldn't have to take her overseas with him.  He then joined the Air Force Reserve in 1950 to get some electronics training and ended up being called up for Korea and was sent to MacDill Air Force Base in Florida, and when he was released at the end of the war ended up in Miami.  I was born in Coral Gables in 1966, but we moved to South Carolina in 1970 in order to get a new job.

Michael Leunig, The Age, 23/6/04

He's good, but a radlib. He can be controversial...

Michael Leunig, The Age, 3/7/04

but usually he is philosophical:

Irony:

Notice how they are starting to draw Edwards almost exactly liek they used to draw Quayle?

I'll see if I can dig something up.

Incorrect cartoon:

While campagning in 1860, Abraham Lincoln had no beard. In October he recieved a letter from  Grace Bedell, an 11 year old girl from Westfield, New York. She wrote him that he should grow a beard because his face was so thin and the ladies liked whiskers and would tease their husbands to vote for, him.

This cartoon, although getting a point accross, is historically inacurate.
