God I hope he loses that special election if it occurs.

Ugh, I hope Massachusetts isn't stupid enough to elect Scott Brown in another special election. Or maybe the legislature can pass a quick bill getting rid of special elections?

I hope Brown can make a comeback, as long as he doesn't act like Pat McCrory (lose a high-profile election as a moderate hero and then subsequently go hard right).

He'd have to be borderline retarded to do that in Massachusetts.

But yeah, unfortunately he'll probably win Kerry's seat if he vacates him or (more likely) the governor's chair.

I doubt it. This year's campaign has not put him in a good light.

As PPP said, Brown is the most liked loser they have polled. So unless he goes completely crazy in the next four days, he'll be around.

If Kerry wants SoS, just convince Patrick to appoint Kennedy to the seat.

Vacancies in Mass. are by special election. Ironically, the law was changed to prevent Gov. Romney from placing a Republican to succeed Kerry if he became President.

^Huh! That's funny. Personally I think Governors should get to appoint to vacancies, w/ a mandatory vote in the state leg to confirm. I think of appointments like that as recess appointments though.

That's true, but they also changed the law to allow for temporary appointments until said election after Senator Kennedy's death. The General Court could easily change that law again if they felt it necessary. I don't think that's likely. I do, however, think Kerry is the mostly likely choice for Secretary of State if the President wins reelection. I think Ed Markey would make a strong candidate (in addition to the already mentioned Kennedy). Governor Patrick should insist on it if that's the case. It's very unlikely any Democrat will be anything other than relentless after Coakley's disastrous performance.

On a somewhat related note, is it a foregone conclusion that Deval Patrick will not run for a third term in (especially in lieu of a probable Kerry departure from the Senate)?

I'm not a fan of Brown, and comments like this don't surprise me. But he's better than Warren.

Still, I wouldn't be surprised if Warren wins. Either Brown will win a squeaker, or Warren by a significant margin.
