This has to be the worst polling day for Mitt Romney in a long time.

Yesterday was pretty bad too, but today could take the cake!

10-31       PPP: Romney-45% Obama-50% - O+5
10-31       Quinn: Romney-45% Obama-50% - O+5
10-29   SUSA: Romney-45% Obama-48% - O+3
10-28   Pharos: Romney-46% Obama-49% - O+3
10-28   PPP: Romney-47% Obama-51% - O+4
10-28   Zogby: Romney-44% Obama-48% - O+4
10-28   Rass: Romney-50% Obama-48% - R+2 (great news!)
10-28   Quinn.: Romney-45% Obama-50% - O+5
10-25   CNN/Time   : Romney-44%   Obama-48% - O+4

Applying the universal +5 Rassy rule... I think we have a consensus, folks.  Romney has good reason to be pouring cash into PA, WI, MI, and MN.

Once OH comes in for the prez 8pm, all there is for CA to be called at 10pm and the election will be over.

CA comes it at 11pm, which is when Obama hits 271 and crosses the threshold.  (oh central time!  my bad)

I do hope the race is called early. I want to see Romney give his concession speech in front of all the heartbroken teabaggers.

The networks will want to air the victory speech while people are still up.  They aren't going to drag OH, PA, MN, WI and the rest of the Obama leans out.

Huh

Based on the polling, this looks to be Romney's current best case scenario, Obama 277, Romney 261:

He needs at least another 8, preferably 9 EVs carved out of Obama somewhere. PA, WI, MI, and MN are all longshots for Romney, but they could win Romney the White House if he doesn't slip up somewhere else, and he doesn't seem to be making the case in Ohio.  Of those four Wisconsin is the most likely to be swingable, but even if he gets the Buckeye State, he has to hope he doesn't lose one of the tossups I've assigned to him.

The best news for Romney in Ohio today is a University of Cincinnati poll showing him down two where the last one was tied. The best.

Huh

His SuperPACs are in the middle of a major ad buy in MN, PA, and MI... and he's taking a trip back to WI.

Am I entirely off-base in thinking that this bears some resemblance to the McCain endgame?

One of the PACs is also going up in New Mexico, which is really a long shot.

That's exactly what this is.  McCain spent months trying to convince the people of Virginia and Ohio that trickle-down economics were going to solve the financial crisis caused by trickle-down economics, only to discover after it was too late that he had blown it and doubled down on a last-ditch effort to snag Pennsylvania.

The difference is that Romney is willing to use racist tactics, but I am skeptical that it will get him the result he needs.

We're even getting a bunch of crappy polls out of these "new swing states" showing the race is suddenly close for no reason! And then come election day Obama will win them all easily. An exact repeat of the final week of 2008.

Oh, I realize he's doing that (and in NM too of all places?). My Huh is over the "good reason" claim. Seems idiotic IMHO.

If you're trailing in the expected battlefields, it makes sense to open up new fronts, in order to maintain at least the semblance of a credible path to 270.

Because it doesn't seem like he HAS a path through Ohio.  I retracted this, however, after seeing the U of Cinn poll showing the race within two, and presented a bit of a theory as to what Romney is up to in that thread.
