No way.  I think it was actually the first time they started to diverge(the last time they diverged was 1988).  In 1956, Eisenhower won big, but Republicans got the crap kicked out of them downballot.

well the democrats majority was built on winning districts where Eisenhower won, but by less than his national %. I could check online, but it seems that there weren't as many mismatch districts then.

Ds holding R PVI seats
AZ 2 R+1.2 (non-Maricopa AZ)
CA 29 R+3.6 (Riverside and Imperial)
FL 5 R+7.6 (Orlando area I think)
FL 6 R+11.9 (Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale)
FL 7 R+14.5 (Lakeland, Sarasota, Bradenton, Fort Myers, Naples)
IL 21 R+0.1 (Central or Southern Illinois I think)

Rs holding D seats
CA 6 D+8.7 (Contra Costa and Solano)
CA 7 D+3.4 (Oakland)
CA 15 D+2.9 (Baldwin Hills area of LA)
DE AL D+2.5
IA 4 D+2 (South Central Iowa)
IA 5 D+1.5 (Central Iowa, DM in particular)
