Perks of Being a Wallflower.   I haven't read the book, so I found it dealt with deeper, more serious themes than expected from the trailer.  Really good.

Annie Hall.

F**king great, the influence on all comedies up to the modern day is quite obvious. It also showed that liberals in Brooklyn in 1977 weren't much different from people there today, which I found amusing.

Skyfall.

Is it just me or did try really hard to be a Nolan Batman film? (Specifically the Heath Ledger one)

Yeah, the bit where Silva escapes from MI-6 is an obvious Joker escaping from the police station rip-off (though not done nearly as well as in TDK). And some of the settings (the Asia skyscraper, the Bond manor or whatever) might as well have been the exact same set. I'm still not really sure why everyone loved it so much.

Killing Them Softly

Awful movie, Ben Mendelsohn and especially Scoot McNairy were pretty good in it though.

Just saw Looper. I have never seen such a clever core idea carried out so badly. Was this some sort of postmodernist challenge to combine the two? If so, I applaud them. It's a time travel movie, and there was actually a scene where older version of the main character spoke to the younger version for about 30 sec-1 min about how he shouldn't concern himself too much with the logical inconsistencies of time travel and meeting yourself. I've already been in theater in suspended disbelief for 45 minutes at this point. There's no need to de facto break the fourth wall. And if you're going to have an action movie that takes itself seriously, you need a hair a character development before the edge of your seat chase scenes and gore. It makes the audience care so much more about the result of the chase scene. Not saying I'm looking for Bruce Willis to emulate Downton Abbey, but Breaking Bad, as an example, does a good job at making you give a crap about the main characters before their lives are endangered. And what a difference it makes. If this were a college paper, I send the student to English department for help in writing.

POINT BLANK [1967]

Lee Marvin is the man. The theory that the film is actually kind of a ghost story is intriguing.

Also, Angie Dickinson is a babe; another job well done by JFK.

Jagten

My friend's comment: 'Only men can understand this movie.' Quite true. What will you do when you're accused?

I saw Life of Pi last night. Very good movie, but I think it's strange that it was only PG. Guess the MPAA is only interested in nudity and f-bombs when it gives ratings. I certainly wouldn't take a child to it. I wouldn't think twice about taking him to an R rated Adam Sandler fartfest though.

That no even somewhat reasonable person would use the MPAA's standards for ratings is no secret. The only reason anyone pays attention to them is lazy parents don't really have anything else to go off of.

I seriously hate to even half-way defend the MPAA on anything but I think it's kind of cool that they gave leeway to a movie that might actually make young people think about things versus mind-rotting stupidity like That's My Boy.

To be fair, I've only seen some of Life Of Pi thus far though...

Shattered Glass

Ran a little too long (not that it's a long movie because it's not, but there was a point when it seemed like it should be over and it wasn't), but it was a very interesting story. Seeing people discuss the internet in a movie set in 1998 is pretty funny. "How easy is it to set up a fake website to deceive people?"

Finally saw the Hobbit.  I rather liked it, although it was a little long and I don't like every change and every use of CGI.  Overall, I definitely enjoyed it.

I can see why a lot of people hated it but I thought it was pretty good.

Lincoln

Daniel Day Lewis was great, but Tommy Lee Jones and James Spader were also both very entertaining. The scene of the House voting on the amendment was riveting and wonderfully done. A really great film about American politics.

Argo

Overall a very riveting film, but the final chase scene with the Revolutionary Guards seemed obviously contrived. The implication that Canada had been allowed to take credit for the operation also seemed rather unkind and untrue. A rather enjoyable film in any case.

I also thought the expository treatment of the Shah was rather unfair and heavily drew from Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis in any case, but that's just ideological. One very minor nitpick is that I noticed when the consul in Istanbul was "correcting" the visa, he was crossing out "Kingdom" and replacing it with "Islamic Republic", but the Shah's government was not the "Kingdom of Iran" but rather the "Imperial State of Iran".

End of Watch

Fantastic, probably my favorite film this year so far. Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena are so, so good in it. The best cop drama I think I've ever seen, and I don't really like cop dramas.

was it violent?  I've read about a third of the book so far.  I have trouble imagining how anyone could effectively bring that to the screen.
