The five greatest Americans probably passed silently through history.

What a liberal thing to say Philip Smiley

I'm afraid I'll be far too ignorant to name the 5 greatest Americans, but here goes, not in any order:

Henry Ford
Thomas Edison
Milton Friedman
Martin Luther King Jr
Susan B Anthony

Runner-up: Cyrus McCormick

It's wrong to pit great historical figures against one another in a gruelling popularity contest like this. It's meaningless, not to mention insulting to their legacies.

I know the people on this board are intelligent thinkers. Unfortunately, these TV producers just want American Idol-like entertainment.

Politics: Benjamin Franklin
Sport: Carl Lewis
Science: Henry Ford
Entertainment and Token Female: Ella Fitzgerald
Business: John D. Rockefeller

And for a very modern pick, someone who is probably the BEST ambassador Amerrica has in the world, Andre Agassi is the stand-by.

I am talking about the Alabama governer after his reconciliation. But I still agree with his belief in a iron fisted foreign policy.

States:
Daniel Webster??? How about Clay?

He is another good pick. I have a lot of respect for Mr Webster for the fact he recognized the legality of secession.

I like the Tesla pick.

Some others: Robert E. Lee, Henry Ford, Charles Lindbergh, Douglas MacArthur...
Tesla was a far smarter man than Edison.  I don't like Edison much.  He was a jerk.

Tesla was a far smarter man than Edison.  I don't like Edison much.  He was a jerk.

Why?
He treated Tesla in a horrible manner.  He told Tesla he will pay him $60,000 if he did a bunch of really, really tough things, in a very short period of time.  Edison thought it was impossible and thought Tesla was just some immigrant idiot from Europe.  Well, he did do it, and more, and Edison said he "joked" about paying him.  Right.  So, Tesla resigned.

Edison and Tesla then had a brutal competition going how to power homes.  Edison advocated DC (direct current) because it is simple.  Tesla advocated AC.  He designed the Niagra Falls Power Company's generators.  He designed the entire AC system, including how power will be distributed, stepped down near neighborhoods, and stepped down for houses.  He designed it all.  He was a great man.

Absolutely.  Einstein was American, just like Nicolas Tesla, and Ayn Rand.
