Important historian, but I cannot fully respect someone who says Stalin's genocide was something that "had to be done".

May he rest in peace.

That's... er... not so at all.

Yeah. He was still active until remarkably recently, of course.

Googling it, I can find what it's roughly about but not the exact quote with content. Someone have it?

He's been cited several times in classes I've taken. Not very familiar with his thought, but he was certainly an important thinker. RIP.

An interesting thinker with deeply unsavory aspects. Shameless apologist for extremist leftism.

Shameless apologist for extremist leftism.

Are you thinking of the Eric Hobsbawm who came up with such a damning critique of the Hard Left in the 1980s that Kinnock was able to use it without modification (and with Hobsbawm's wholehearted approval) as a stick to beat them with, or a different Eric Hobsbawm?

Talking of which, you can find many of them here: http://www.amielandmelburn.org.uk/home_index.htm

Look under Internet Archive and then Marxism Today and search for his surname. Some good stuff there.

Vicious attacks on Trots and Anarchists are something Stalinists, the Daily Mail and the Labour Right should naturally agree on, don't you think? Wink
