I've noticed ever since I got on here that there is a noticeable level of bias and dare I even say bigotry against the South.  Sure, I realize that my region doesn't have much to brag about, given our dark history (no pun intended).  We also have much things to improve upon that people not in the South are doing well on.  However, I don't feel it excuses some of the anti-feelings I've seen expressed on this forum towards the South.  Believe it or not, there are some openminded people down here, a lot of us have black and gay friends, not all of us are greedy bastards, and there are days when a tornado doesn't destroy the local RV park.

My opinion is that a lot of people here need to visit a place before they make collective assumptions about it.  Yes, there is homophobia and racism here, just like in Philadelphia.  Yet, it's more outrageous, hateful, and worthy of condemnation when a Southern Baptist says it than when an Irish Catholic says it.  Double standard much?

So may I ask, what gives?

A liberal majority combined with the way they tend to stereotype things.

We should be focusing our hatred much more on the most racist city in the country, Boston.

This. And it is not like we from the South are not guilty of the same thing towards the North, its just more prevalent against us because...well..we are outnumbered.

We should be focusing our hatred much more on the most racist city in the country, Boston.

I see a lot of people assuming that the South is the racist epicentre of the world. That's ridiculous. I haven't seen all this hate that the South gets accused of.

Quite honestly, South Carolina is one of my favourite places in the world.

It's because we're beautiful people. Have you seen our ladies? That is the only explanation I can come up with to explain the hate.

I will freely admit that I have quite a level of bigotry against the South.  I can't help but believe that Southerners are racist and stupid.  (But only if they're white and Republican, which is ironic since it was Democrats who always fought against civil rights and Republicans who fought for them).  People in general stereotype Southerners as stupid, racist, hicks, etc. because of history and the tendency to judge people based on that.  I like to think of myself as the conservative equivalent of a Yankee Republican, although I'm from the Midwest, not New England.  Irish Catholics do indeed have quite a history of racism against blacks, and it was largely because of this (along with Republican social reforms) that they voted Democrat.  I need to work on this anti-Southern bigotry really badly.  Love the women and the food, though!

Overwhelmingly, the south does not believe I should have the civil right of marriage. Therefore, I encourage the south to go ______ itself for trying to hold the more progressive states back.

As a native and inhabitant of Western Massachusetts, I'd be amenable to this.

San Francisco can be fairly  racist, too, in a "Rich white liberal condescending elitist" way. And it's very segregated by race.

And I say all this as a SF Bay Area Democrat.

You think being a southerner on this board is rough?!  You think you got something to whine and bitch about?!  Try being a Republican here, or a Romney supporter.  Try it for one week and see if you survive all the hazing.  I'm not talking about getting a blue shield.  I'm talking about really being a sympathizer or defender of the GOP.

You get back to me when you have something serious to complain about.

People like some Atlas liberals are part of the reason why we've been losing the South. Look at Arkansas; they still have New Deal infrastructure in place and are solidly Democratic at a local and state level. Though some of the blame lies on some Blue Dogs being crybabies, some of it does lie on the rise of the DLC and the Democratic Party's abandonment of its history from 1832 to 1980 as the party of the working man to instead be the party of yuppies and women.

Yeah, San Franciscans can be pretty racist. Not saying that they are equally guilty, but maybe people attacking the South should look a little closer to home.

I honestly don't know of any prominent New Deal Democrats in the South these days.  In fact, the Democrats that are most involved in those states' politics tend to take the conservative line on basically every issue, economic and social.  Arkansas is a great example of that.  The current governor of that state is a self-proclaimed New Democrat as are many of Virginia's Democratic politicians (Warner, Kaine, etc.).  Bill Clinton campaigned on a DLC-formulated economic platform and performed quite well in the South in both his elections.  Racial polarization has a lot to do with the current trends, not talking about Jesus enough might have a lot to do with the current trends.  Even so, Clinton won states that not even an Obama landslide would flip this year.

The only really liberal Democrats from the Deep South these days usually represent majority-minority constituencies or large cities, and not much else.  Not even Huey Long could get elected in a state in the Deep South just because it's become so anti-Democrat over the years.  Sadly, Arkansas is incredibly unlikely to send a single Democrat to the House after this election and it will probably be a while before it does again.
