Video has been released of Thompson bragging "who better than me to do away with Medicaid and Medicare?"

The Tea Party managed to gift Republicans with an unelectable candidate merely by forcing him to say things like this to win a primary.

I think Tommy Thompson has run the worst general election senate campaign out of any candidate this year. He literally decided to sit on his ass and take a nap immediately after winning the primary while Baldwin carpet-bombed the hell out of him.

Democrats may even be able to hold the Senate in 2014 if we can get net Senate seat gains this year.

It looks like we could credit holds in MO and WI and the gain in ME to the Tea Party (for discouraging RINO Snowe from staying), while if we take MA and NV, that can't be ascribed to them.

If Democrats can get to 55 this year, they would probably have a pretty decent chance of holding the Senate in 2014.  Even if they do lose it in 2014, they will almost certainly get it back in 2014.  No way Kirk, Toomey, and Johnson survive Presidential year polarization and turnout.  Even Burr will have a very tough time in increasingly Democratic North Carolina.  The only real targets Republicans have are Nevada and possibly Colorado and those states are only getting tougher for them.  Also you have to figure that McCain and Grassley will retire and both of those open seats will be highly competitive.

Im beginning to think that Democrats will have a natural edge in the Senate most of the time.  Unlike the House, Republicans cant gerrymander the states themselves in their favor.

I really can't stand Tommy Thompson. Happily endorsed the Libertarian in this race.

We won't net gain seats the best we can do is keep it where it is at 51-2-47 winning MA,MO,NV,OH,FLA, and NM while losing MT,ND and NEB.

It's conceivable we net seats if we win NV, MA, and ME and hold MT.

Thompson is losing because he's an uninspiring idiot who doesn't understand the concept of campaigning and only won the primary because his main opponents kept hammering each other.

My grand theory about this is that it's harder for Republicans to win in the current environment the greater amount of attention and news that is focused on them. It's easy to win House seats with nothing, it's not as easy to win a statewide Senate race with nothing, and it's definitely not easy to win the Presidency with nothing. The more attention modern day right-wing policy gets paid, the less popular it seems to be.

I've forgotten it so much that I thought this was a Fred Thompson joke. But, no, Tommy's campaign was even worse.

Called it, albeit I was wrong with regard to which gaffe the Baldwin campaign would hammer Thompson with.

Hovde might have been a better candidate in retrospect.

He's not the same man he once was when he first became governor.  That's clear now.

It's similar to the PA Senate in that respect, though Smith is still behind.

Thompson may have run a bad campaign, but there is history that the general election doesn't really go well when you have a severely fractioned primary and that seems to be the case again.

I think he just doesn't like progressives in the Senate.
