But those saying McKinley was a warmonger are obviously completely or willfully ignorant of history. McKinley wanted to avoid war if possible. He was desperate to keep America out of the global imperial schemes propagated by such nations as Britain. He was basically forced to go to war with Spain because public demand was so great. McKinley weakly bent to the pressure to go to war, but only after it had been built up on a huge scale and he couldn't stand the heat any longer. The man was many things, but warmonger was not one of them. The American public, to be sure were.
