They interview a woman who says she believes Obama is a Muslim, but will vote for him nonetheless!

So they're troubled by his religion...

...but they're voting for someone whom they think is of an even more 'foreign and scary' religion.

Mormonism is more foreign and scary to Fundamentalist Christians than Islam ought to be. (Grammar Nazism alert. And Islam is more foreign and scary than Mormonism ought to be.)

Yes!  This, despite the horror of peering into their 'thought processes', is still a hugely positive story.

It's worth remembering that Bill Clinton twice won five states (Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Tennessee, and West Virginia) that Barack Obama lost badly (by margins of 13% or greater); in fact he lost all of those states by larger margins than he lost Texas. Democrats used to win those five states in their wins. Add to that Missouri which was really close and has a large region much like northern Arkansas, eastern Kentucky or Tennessee, or most of West Virginia in cultural or political heritage.

I have yet to see any statistically-significant post-Convention bounce in such swing states as Ohio and North Carolina. But if there is one, could it be concentrated in places that Barack Obama lost badly in 2008?

I'm not saying that an gain by President Obama among the demographic of Clinton-but-not-Obama voters would be enough  to achieve anything except to consolidate Ohio as a win, swing Missouri, or barely hold Indiana before he has a chance to pick up any electoral votes in Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Tennessee, or West Virginia.

And Fundamentalist Christians are more scary and vicious towards Mormonism than Islam ought to be. Some of those fundie predecessors are the reason we fled to Utah.

I've actually heard some of the anti-Mormonism down here. I'm not surprised that those people would support a "Muslim" over a Mormon. It's like they would rather support a "known enemy."

Reminds me of a great, though perhaps apocryphal, story from 2008:

A volunteer for the Obama campaign is going to door to door in some stereotypically white working class area. He walks up to a house, rings the door bell, and an old white woman opens the door. The volunteer aks her who she and her husband are voting for. The old white woman yells back to the living, where her old white husband is watching TV, "Who are we voting for, dear?" And he replies, "The n!"  The wife nods solemnly in agreement and requests a yard sign.

Just for the lulz I went to the biggest Baptist megachurch one Easter. The pastor made remarks that weren't particularly flattering toward Mormonism. Still, that crowd sure as heck isn't voting for Obama. The issue is more about turnout than defection. And it's not like Tennessee is going to be competitive anyway. Could be an issue in NC, VA, and FL though.

Precisely.  Obama needs VA, and if he wins either NC or FL the election's in the bag.  The participation or lack thereof of these poor chuckleheads is potentially quite important.

Are we 100% sure that the Yahoo newsbot didn't pick up an Onion article and attribute it to Reuters by mistake?
