Couldn't he just say he would limit the amount one can deduct for those making above x amount?

It's virtually impossible to get rid of a deduction that would significantly raise revenue without raising taxes on "middle class" families, which is exactly what no candidate in their right mind says they would do.

The mortgage interest deduction sits squarely on the third rail of American politics, right next to Social Security and her gold-digging little sister Medicare.

This is hardly surprising. Romney is basically running a campaign about nothing.

Call it the Clinton arithmetic effect. I am surprised it took the media this long to start asking these guys how they can balance the budget and increase defense spending and cut taxes and preserve medicare (including reversing the Obamacare growth savings) all at the same time.

So the question is: Are they hiding the unpopular cuts they will make or do they have no clue how they will do it?

I think Romney's plan is to lower tax rates for all, and then get lower deductions for the well off. No idea what the cutoff is and whether he will be focusing on certain deductions or just lowering the amount that can be deducted from your income. And I don't think Romney is interested in clarifying that. He is running a fairy tale campaign. We just have to suspend reality and believe him that everything will be fine.

Bill Clinton wasn't lying, was he?
