Actually, a lot of the people were there because of their accomplishments.  One was the governor of a state; it wasn't like she was a state senator running for some other office or anything.

Agreed; that is literally the only reason the Utah GOP nominated Mia Love to run in UT-04. Because she's a black female Mormon. They had three white guys who had basically the same political positions as her (read: far-right), but they wanted their own conservative Obama in Utah.

Agreed; that is literally the only reason the Utah GOP nominated Mia Love to run in UT-04. Because she's a black female Mormon. They had three white guys who had basically the same political positions as her (read: far-right), but they wanted their own conservative Obama in Utah.

Or, she managed to consolidate the 'anti-establishment' vote behind her against the 'establishment' candidate Carl Wimmer. There was a very real ideological bent to Love's run and that she was black and female happened to be a coincidence. Now, at the convention, because she was black and female and not a Republican stereotype and gave an excellent speech the media poured attention on her. But the idea some people have here that ethnic minorities 'don't count' if they're Republicans is really stupid:

I think the argument would be that whether the Republicans feature minorities on stage or not is not as important as the policies and electoral tactics they pursue.

I'm not going to "go there" as to whether or not individual Republicans, in their heart of hearts, are racist. But against a backdrop of Republicans actively disenfranchising minorities in states like PA and OH and running welfare race-baiting ads, it's possible that whether or not they put Mia Love and the wife of the Governor of PR onstage doesn't change the judgment on certain aspects of the party's gestalt. Not addressing those issues, or pretending to address those issues by putting the wife of the Governor of PR on stage while continuing to disenfranchise voters, are two sides of the same coin.
