Depends on what you mean by "white." If you mean Middle-Eastern, then he probably had a good chance of turning out to be a rare Muslim Republican as a result of his hometown, until Trump appeared. Voting D up and down the ballot this year and probably voted Biden if he voted in the Democratic primaries.

If by "white" you mean European-American, then he's very likely a convert. For a white southerner to convert to Islam, they'd have to be a Berniecrat for sure. Maybe even developed an interest in the religion because of Trump's attacks on it in 2016.
