Oh no! RIP.

I remember learning quite a bit about her in elementary school when we did our science unit on the space program.

Our school used her program from 1st to 8th grade, so I also have learned quite a lot about her.

Indeed.

Her sexuality is irrelevant. Her achievement as the first American and third overall woman in space is very relevant.

Rest in Peace.

It's relevant when people strive to exclude us from positions of achievement or from history, which still happens all too often.

Color me confused...but wasn't Sally Ride married to another astronaut during her space flight years - wasn't her and her husband the first astronaut married couple in NASA history?

Never said that lesbians or gay people can't be heroes, just that her sexuality has no ultimate connection with her many achievements.

This may actually explain the rumors floating around the Clearlake area late 1984.  Apparently, there was a lockerroom scandal swept under the rug involving Judith Resnik taking a nap in the locker room and waking up with someone's nose in her panties.  Speculation is that is what got Crippen shipped out to Vandenburg for the Polar Express...but now with Ride outted, who knows?  And, for the record, Resnik was not a lesbian as she was well known to have the hots for Tom Sellek.

Right, because women can't possibly have the hots for both other women and Tom Selleck.

Give it a rest, guys. It's obviously an important part of Ride's life but if you're going to be classless about it then just don't.

She was married for some years but split from her husband. Don't know if it was a love marriage or one she did to hide, and we likely never will, nor should it matter too much. It is not at all uncommon for people to come out later in life. Some were straight before, some weren't. I know several women who were married to men into their 30s or 40s who are now with women.

Well, from the last couple of posts, it appears orientation can switch mid-life (so much for the born-that-way POV), so the possibility of falling someplace in between seems "logical".

There's that term...again.

I take it the meme is sexually erotic in nature and is only understood in the context of this forum, for when I google it, 99% of the links point back to threads on this forum regarding homosexuality or African-American women...

...which makes me wonder why it is being applied to me, for I certainly don’t plan on becoming anyone’s bitch anytime soon.

It's not always a question of switching as such. What's more surprising is that you've made it past the midway point of 2012 with bisexuality still an apparently new concept.

Plus, it was Tom Selleck in the eighties.

I didn't say the concept was new to me, I just pointed out that if the polarity can swing 180 degrees throughout one's life, then having it reside (at least at times) someplace in between seems "logically" possible.
