a few disjointed points.

first, the relation of the negative to the positive.  I was riding along the highway in the rain earlier today, just in time for the opening of Sean Hannity's 3-6pm radio show.  so I listen, they open with some 'objective' stuff on the shooting, tapes of 911 calls (how do they get those anyway, are they public domain?), rapidly approaching the ~320pm commercial break.  just before the break, Hannity steps into the familiar refrain, about how some people amazingly are politicizing the Tragedy, and they are on the left, and they did this in Columbine and always do it, and it's unthinkable how anyone could even consider it, but because They did it, we get to address it after the break.

a brilliant rhetorical tactic.  it is Hannity's responsibility to politicize the Tragedy.  it is his job, no blame.  but the tactic!  to at once forward one's own political position, while all the while denying that it is political, and only one's opponents had the audacity to make it so... there's something here in it that's very deep, it's just instinct and knee-jerk to Hannity, he knows not what he does, but in the hands of someone more competent the tactic could go places.

actually I will divorce my other comments, involving the relationship of sadism to the public and private spheres, from this thread, and post them somewhere else, if at all.

Hannity an asshole? What else is new? He is politicizing the politicalization (if that is a word) politicization of a tragedy.

For Hannity and fellow travellers, you are only allowed to politicize a tragedy* if the act is committed by a Moslem. Then you can fill the airwaves all day long about border security and the Isalmo-fascist menace.

*Foreigners or minorities can work also.
