It just seems strange that a state that went Republican 6 times from 1968-1988, including in 2 very close election years, suddenly starts voting Democratic heavily after 1992. Explain?

The suburbs (Lake and DuPage counties) started to become a swing region rather than a Republican region.

John Anderson is a perfect microcosm of northern IL Republicans, I feel.  They drifted gradually left, while the national party continued marching right.
