who does Obama nominate to replace him?

Even though the election is only 4 1/2 months away, the nation still needs a Vice President.

And how would the confirmation hearings go?

Tough to say. Ideally, he'd want an electorally advantageous, moderate, capable to run in 2016 guy. Schweitzer?

Confirmation would probably be a breeze. If the VP was popular it would be disadvantageous to stall the implementation of the next VP.

Ted Strickland would be good for the next four years. He'd help in Ohio, because voters there have massive buyer's remorse over ousting him, and I don't see any Senate Democrat voting against him.

Unless he got diagnosed with terminal cancer, I can't see him resigning with only 6 months left in his term.  He'd just not run on the ticket.  Even if his health was middling, he could probably be an acting President for a couple months should something happen to Obama.

Yeah, he would just not run on the ticket if health concerns were a reality. But, if he did resign I think Obama will go with Hillary. Quick and easy.

And I don't think Hillary would accept. If Hillary wants to be the president one day, she needs to stay as far away from Obama as she can.

Same, but for different reasons. I think Hillary's done with politics.

If Biden had to resign as VP tomorrow due to health concerns..........  There would go the only guy on the ticket that the White House handlers trust to speak without a teleprompter.

It would depend on whether Obama would want someone to be the 2016 frontrunner.

I would imagine that Biden would stick around until the end of the term. Otherwise, he might choose a respected elder statesman/ centrist figure guaranteed to sail through the Senate as a placeholder, while picking someone else as the running mate. In that case, he might pick Robert Gates or former Senator Byron Dorgan of North Dakota.

Obama could follow his selection of Biden by choosing someone respected who is unlikely to run in four years. Bill Nelson would make sense as it would likely help with Florida.

If Obama were to pick Mark Warner, Hillary Clinton or Andrew Cuomo, and win reelection, his choice would become the overwhelming favorite for the 2016 primary.

Brian Schweitzer is a good idea. Maybe Russ Feingold or Mark Warner.

He can't put WI in the spotlight, especially for the dem that was ousted. Warner would be safe, pulls Virginia, strong for 2016. Schweitzer I think is too much of a character, don't want anyone looking even close to a Biden 2.0
