The private sector has recovered to some extent, but the public sector has been gutted. If a Republican President had called this a victory he would call this a great victory because, of course, the public sector doesn't matter. After all, all that one needs do is have 'educational' media piped into the school -- ideally, right-wing material.

Thing is, Mitt is the man who eliminated the jobs and pensions. You see, he enjoys firing people.

This gaffe won't carry the same weight as "the fundamentals of our economy are strong." McCain said that right as the financial system was collapsing and we were losing hundreds of thousands of jobs every month. Today, Obama's remark seems out of touch, but it doesn't seem callous.

By the way, why do people only use the word "gaffe" in a political context? Can't anybody make a gaffe?

I always define it in my head as making a really public screw-up.

For example, I made a pretty big gaffe as a boy scout when I accidentally raised the Canadian flag upside-down in front of hundreds of people at a scouting convention. Tongue

The reason the public sector is not doing well is because the GOP has worked hard to block every effort to increase public investment in infrastructure and education. Sad

This isn't a gaffe, this is a severe error. If it was an offhand remark, it would just be a gaffe, but it was in a speech. This why McCain's " the fundamentals of our economy" remark was so disastrous, too.

Except McCain had some wiggle room to BS and say he meant "the American spirit" or "the American worker" when he was talking about the fundamentals of the economy. I don't know what Romney can say to make this better.

But McCain said the fundamentals of the economy were strong multiple times as the US was losing 500,000 jobs per month. Even Herbert Hoover probably would have thought McCain was out of touch there. While Obama certainly understated the magnitude of the recession, he was far less clueless than McCain.

Exactly, McCain made his gaffe repeatedly. And his campaign manager also called Americans a bunch of whiners.
