I like breaking news. I don't like breaking this story - http://www.politico.com/blogs/burns-haberman/2012/05/santorum-endorses-romney-122722.html

One "good" part of this story: he endorsed via e-mail.

Santorum is part of the establishment or once was and still yearns to be. There is no way he wasn't going to endorse Romney. I'm interested in hearing Winfield's take on this. I'm much less interested in hearing from Politico, who ought to be banned.

Apparently so.

And yeah, I'm sure those guys are all over him now.

By the way Scott, isn't it somewhat refreshing to not have a confusing string of D-CT avatars? Tongue

Kind of.  Confusing everybody else is always fun, though!

Most of this e-mail reads like a lecture from Rick to Mitt. I love that. If anyone thinks this is ass kissing, think again.

On the bright side, the good news is that we have entered the post-Romney-2012-primary era of the GOP. Hopefully, never again will we ever see the pathetic spectacle of a Republican whom is actually conservative labeling a moderate Republican nominee a "conservative." Santorum was careful to note the ways in which Romney was to the left of him. That is the welcomed news. In essence, Santorum labeled Romney as marginally better than Obama.

The person most responsible for the lukewarm endorsement of Mitt Romney is Mitt Romney. When he used a previous Santorum endorsement of Romney as the "conservative" in his race against John McCain to attack Santorum he sent a message to every conservative to watch the language they use in endorsing a moderate least their words be used against them in the future.

So I guess he was holding out to see if the Libertarians would endorse him? Tragic.

Mark McKinnon didn't like Santorum's lukewarm endorsement and said Romney should tell Rick to take a hike. No down side, in his opinion, either since there are other conservatives that can rally the base.

Mitt isn't stupid enough to do this but I dare other tools to keep saying this stuff.

Santorum obviously hopes Romney loses so he can run again in 2016, much like Romney (less obviously but unmistakably) wanted McCain to lose in 2008 so he could run in 2012.  That's what happens when your party develops a tradition of nominating the preceding runner-up. 80, 96, 08, 12...

Even though Bush was the sitting Vice President, '88 counts as well.

Santorum isn't the runner up. That would be Ron Paul and thus the next in line belongs to the Paulite faction. I'm not surprised at Ricks endorsement. Insiders stick together.

You could claim second if he hadn't suspended. Thus a Paulite is next in line.

Yeah, forget the whole second-most-amount-of-states/votes thing.

On the positive side, Santorum did, finally, endorse Romney, as everyone knew he would, at some point or other.

On the negative side, as is usual with Santorum, this self indulging Santorum ego trip, put into the form of an email, is all about Santorum, really.

Romney agrees with me on this, Romney agrees with me on that.  The issues that I put forward in the primary campaign will be well represented in a Romney administration.

Santorum never even had the class, or the good taste, or the guts, or, one might even say, the humility, to turn this into a major campaign event, for Rick and Karen Santorum to stand on a stage beside Mitt and Ann Romney, and say, in clear, unmistakable, unequivocal terms,  I proudly endorse Mitt Rommey for President of the United States.  He then proceeds to deliver an enthusiastic, detailed speech of why America needs Mitt Romney as President.

Then Romney steps to the fore, thanks Santorum, thanks Karen Santorum, thanks the Santorum family, praises Rick Santorum for his many years of dedicated service to the nation and the party, for the spirited primary campaign, then proceeds to address Americans about the failed Obama Presidency, and how President Romney will restore jobs, and America's sense of purpose.

They shake hands, they hug, the wives hug one another, the event is scheduled in prime time, is covered nation wide on all the networks.  The thousands in attenance burst into thunderous cheering and applause, while the entire nation watches, and is very impressed.

That's the way this should have been handled, but then again, we are talking about Rick Santorum here, and for him, it's all about Rick.

Why are you demanding that Santorum do something that Romney has never done?
