Option 1 is the tragically common How would these people vote? threads. Y'know, these things -

McDonalds franchise owners who also play video games?
Afro-Carribean evangelicals going through messy divorces?

...or even worse, the fictional person version -

André is a union member, transgender, gay Mexican. He works in a seafood restaurant on Wednesdays and looks after his sick grandmother every other day of the week. He owns two guns and once saw George Clooney walking down the street, but didn't say anything. André believes in God, listens to retro 90s electronic music and cuts his own hair.

How would he vote?!

The second option is, of course, the Write A Letter To X, One Word At A Time threads, which have always been unambigiously awful, although I'd have to go with option 1 just because of the sheer volume.

I've also included a handy write-in option for another nominee and even an option for those inclined to post "this thread" or something similar when polls like this come up. Wink

The letter threads, or "Post maps of Obama/Biden vs. Romney/___________" type crap.

"Write a letter to" threads should be ban worthy. I am not telling a joke, you people are terrible.

I fully agree with the above post. Instant perma-ban for anyone starting, posting in, or reading a "write a letter to" thread.

Threads?  The Deluge is only one thread.

I actually like #1, most of them are meta, we shoulda kept going until someone would get banned and mods would throw a fit. Unfortunately it wouldn't be BRTD who started them iirc.

Indeed it is, but it's not the only thread that uses that as a theme.

Option 3. To be more precise, polls like these:

"Why does opebo .../Does opebo remind you of .../If opebo .../Is opebo ..."

Option 1.

Nobody cares how Mary, the 69 year old grandmother who plays Call of Duty and poops every day at 3 o'clock, will vote.

I also dislike threads where the OP asks the opinion of a certain type of person or group and then never comes back to the thread.

(and just so we're clear, I'm NOT talking about this thread or the OP)

The letter threads are utterly pointless, and clearly make the least contribution to the site. At least the threads about how certain groups vote are something of a demographic analysis of voting patterns. Perhaps they've been overplayed, I haven't seen much along those lines, so perhaps they're more annoying than I think? I spend most of my time on Al's board, so I haven't seen many of them.

Dead0man's right that mocking people for having different beliefs is decidedly unfunny. Al and Xahar are about the only ones who use any wit.

oakie, if it weren't for the "How would these people vote?" threads the 2012 forum would probably end up nothing more than constant "What will the map be if Chris Christie/Marco Rubio/whatever is picked as Romney's running mate?" or "Can Obama/Romney win *this state*?" type stuff for several months. You want that?

"Why does opebo .../Does opebo remind you of .../If opebo .../Is opebo ..."

Also, "opebo vs. ..."

I'll go with this and with what dead0man said.
