I am conservative on social issues, but am practically a socialist when it comes to economics. The social issues matter a tad more to me. I don't agree with a single thing Bush has done for the economy, but he is strong on defense, and strong on family values.

With the exception of your emphasis on social issues, you and I see eye-to-eye.  Smiley

Certainly I do, Tweed.  My economic views are an almost perfect compromise between Right and Left, between laissez-faire capitalism and socialism.

Social Conservative/Economic Liberal

That's interesting.

Anyway, I would say social liberal/economic conservative for myself, though I am far from "pure-bred" on either of these.

Hmmmm . . . you can't classify me as Repblican or Democrat, nor can I be easily classified as a conservative.  I'm more authoritarian than anything, believing that when things need to get done, a strong hand is required to get people moving rather than sit around for years debating an issue.  This is one of the problems I have with Congress and the UN.  You are elected/appointed for a reason . . . to get things done.  If you aren't capable of that, then you lack the basic requirements for the position and should be replaced with the next election cycle.

Mainstream Democrat, maybe towards the left end of the DLC being that I am somewhat economically moderate and pretty socially liberal.

In American terms I'm a far left liberal.

Economically: I don't believe profit should be the primary motivation in about half of the economy.  That is enough for you to essentially be a socialist in America.  I do however strongly believe there is a great value for a limited government party.  I'd however move the US pretty far to the left with tax funded universal healthcare and preschool to university education.   I'm a strong advocate of a balanced budget.

Socially:  Generally the US needs to become more socially liberal.  The War against homosexuals needs to end.  Civil Rights must be protected.  Further illegal wars of aggression should result in the aggressors in jail for long terms.    Internationalism not Unilateralism.  Both sides of the Abortion debate have good points; but abortion isn't murder and I'll side against the side claiming that every time.

In a nutshell, I'm economically left-of-centre, socially centre-right and a defense/foreign policy 'hawk'

You're not a socialist, Progress, merely a liberal.  Just because the political spectrum is misunderstood in the US doesn't mean it doesn't exist.  Lots of things are like that.

Economic and Fiscal issues
Progressive-Populist.  Generally pro-government, but I recognize more government isn't always good for the common-good.  Anti-corporate.
-Steeply cut corporate welfare (unecesary subsidies, wasteful defense spending, pork projects, and all other areas of government spending)
-Universal Healthcare
-College or post-highschool Education is a right
-Higher minimum wage, index it to inflation
-Eliminate taxes for working families of incomes <$40,000
-Renew New-Deal business regulations
-Repeal Bush tax cuts on wealthy, estates, and capital gains.
-Repeal CAFTA, and NAFTA (Free trade with Canada would still be in place due to prior agreements)
-Steeply punish companies that outsource jobs
-Small business tax cuts
-Penalize companies that pay CEO's 300 times or executives 50 times the wage of median worker salary

Socially I can be summed up as pro-family and pro-life.  But I'm happy with the government status-quo on social issues, generally.

Foreign Policy, I'm a moderate hawk, neocon-ish.  I believe we should be vehemently pro-democracy, shouldn't deal really at all with non-democracies.  We need to stand up to China.  We should increase foreign aid, especially to democracies, and push for the U.N. to clean up itself and reject all non-democracies or form an alternative orginization for the U.S. and allies to participate in.  We need to focus on a more mobile and efficient millitary, ready to deal with whatever threats whereever they are.  But policing like we are doing in Iraq isn't a good idea.  We should have toppled Hussien, and then gradually reduced our presence.  Should have been more like Afgahistan, where the Northern Alliance worked with the U.S. to topple the Taliban and provided a tentative native authority, rather than all U.S. authority which cost us a lot in Iraq.
