I don't know for sure....but "rolling over in his grave" is a common expression when signifying how much things have changed and how such changes would disappoint a respected elder who has passed on.  Like Ford sometimes did, it seems he goofed on this one.

It's unfortunate but I'd put that in the Dumbest category. Very, very bad move by H.W.

Ford was notorious for his malapropisms.

I think that LBJ tagged him correctly in say something to the effect that 'he played too much football without a helmet.'

Welcome to the forum, Zeus. Nice to see another South Dakotan, despite your being in the wrong party. Wink

My favorite quote in general is probably "The people have spoken. The bastards." Although a lot Mo Udall has said is great.

1.  We've done our part. And as I walk off into the city streets, a final word to the men and women of the Reagan revolution, the men and women across America who for 8 years did the work that brought America back. My friends: We did it. We weren't just marking time. We made a difference. We made the city stronger, we made the city freer, and we left her in good hands. All in all, not bad, not bad at all.

And so, goodbye, God bless you, and God bless the United States of America.
                                -Ronald Reagan's Farewell adress.
(Im not sure what it is about that speach, but it gives me chills)

2. We know smoking tobacco is not good for kids, but a lot of other things aren't good. Drinking's not good. Some would say milk's not good.

3. "I am not worried about the deficit. It is big enough to take care of itself." -- Ronald Reagan
AND
Before I refuse to take your questions, I have an opening statement. -Ronald Reagan

4. "Too many good docs are getting out of the business. Too many OB-GYNs aren't able to practice their love with women all across this country." —President George W. Bush

"Recession is when your neighbor is out of a job.
Depression is when you're out of a job.
Recovery is when Carter is out of a job."

-Ronald Reagan, 1980

"Let us not be satisfied with a foreign policy that seems to have as its major objective obtaining the rights to sell Pepsi-Cola in the Soviet Union."

-Ronald Reagan, 1976 [attacking the "Kissinger-Ford" foreign policy]

1.  You see one slum, you've seen them all.

2.  "... the nattering nabobs of negativism..."

I have heard both of these quotes.  I have to say that there's truth to them, though like most things, not absolute truth.

"I could think of no worse example for nations abroad, who for the first time are trying to put free electoral procedures into effect, than that of the United States wrangling over the results of our presidential election, and even suggesting that the presidency itself could be stolen by thievery at the ballot box."

- Richard Nixon, on his decision not to contest the results of the 1960 election against John F. Kennedy.  It was topical four years ago.  Now it's not.  Still, I like it.

1. Freedom is a fragile thing and is never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. Those who have known freedom, and then lost it, have never known it again. - Ronald Reagan

2. You're either with us or against us in the fight against terror. – George W. Bush

3. Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it."
- Ronald Reagan
And
“My fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you I just signed legislation which outlaws Russia forever. The bombing begins in five minutes.”
- Ronald Reagan – ok this may not really fit here, but I love the quote.

4. If you think that rape should be legal, then don't vote. - Cameron Diaz
