I like it.  

I first started hearing it in the very early 90s, about the time I was graduating from college.  I think it was jarring the first time I heard it but I quickly got used to it, and eventually I found it comforting.

Same here.  It's what I meant by comforting.  I'd be on a first date with a girl and I'd hear her roommates call her dude and it always made me more comfortable in making casual, but effective, inquiries on the subject at hand.

My best friend calls me 'dude' and my real-life gender expression is (deliberately) up in the air enough that that might or might not count.
