A former librarian would support literacy because its something she is actually qualified to comment about. She has experience, she knows her way around a library.

I see nothing to suggest that Michelle Obama has any such experience or qualifications that would lead me to believe she has any helpful advice to offer around obesity.

This is moronic. You need to have "qualifications" to suggest that maybe feeding your kid McDonalds every day might be a bad idea?

I don't think first lady really matters that much in a election, for example Hillary Clinton was perceived as a polarizing figure in 1996 but it didn't impact Bill's re-election at all. Laura Bush was a very nice lady who no one didn't like but it wasn't a major factor in Bush's re-election.

Speaking as an Obama supporter I hope Republicans keep making M Obama fat cracks, Independent women love that.

Good thing Michelle is totally in support of saying one thing and doing another. Hey, it's fine. You want people to take your advice seriously, you might want to put some thought into putting it into application.

I hope she keeps preaching nutrition to America. That seems a real winner to me.

Hopefully Obama can put her front and centre so she can make the choices for America's dinner table.

Independent women love being told by another mother that they aren't feeding their kids right.

Jesus Christ......

This is an argument I would expect from a four year old.

YES, YES IT IS. OH MY GOD.

Jesus, how is this hard to understand? Raising awareness of obesity is about the easiest no-brainer someone in a position as non-partisan as First Lady can champion.  It's a sad sign of the times that the GOP see fit to attack this just because her last name's "Obama". Ugh.

Yes, Americans are really fond of people getting up on the bully pulpit and telling them what they can or cannot eat or drink.

They are even more fond of people who do the above and then go and order unhealthy fast food.

They are even more fond of mothers telling them that what they are feeding their children is wrong.

And finally, they are impressed by Michelle Obama's qualifications as a nutritionist who has spent her life studying the topic.

Ah, okay, I get it, so your argument is literally that only nutritionists can suggest that it might be good for kids to eat healthy food?

First Lady: Maybe kids should eat healthier so we can prevent mass obesity.

You: OMG SOCIALIST NAZIS

How does one determine what is and isn't healthy food?

Is she a doctor and can assess people to confirm that this is the case? Really? No. Well then perhaps she should earn those qualifications first.

Her words have no more force than any other private citizen. She seems to assume otherwise.

If we put Michelle Obama's words in somebody else's mouth - particularly that of a priest - you'd be the first one to say it was hypocritical. You wouldn't put up with someone else telling you what you should be doing.

Uhuh. Or she's using her position of prominence to achieve a noble goal in stopping America's children becoming unhealthy and obese. That could be it.

Okay, I don't know why I'm supposed to address a thing you just made up, but if a priest was publicly campaigning against people eating fast food or whatever I'd be all for it. Why would you think otherwise? Huh

Statists don't take well when being told that what they are doing is wrong, unless they get to be the ones doing the telling.

You don't need to be a qualified nutritionist to suggest maybe not eating chocolate-coated bacon every day is a good idea, any more than you need to a trained psychologist to suggest that, say, bullying in schools might be bad for kids. Are you being deliberately obtuse?

Yes, I want a first lady who lectures me on obesity.

Score, every other American woman except Roseanne +10k, Michelle - 10k.

Then don't pay attention to her campaign, it's not mandatory to listen. Some people would like to avoid high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes, anyone who has a problem with that is nitpicking and being paranoid over nothing.

Ok, now what would you think about a Politician who said that and then promptly walked into a McDonalds outlet and ordered a huge meal, as Michelle did here?

It wouldn't hugely matter, given that it doesn't make them a hypocrite to eat crappy food once in a while.

Given that Michelle Obama is quite obviously not overweight, she can presumably afford to relax her standards occasionally. There's nothing wrong with giving kids candy or whatever now and again, the problem is when unhealthy eating is a regular habit.

Yeah Republicans should run an anti-Michelle Obama campaign. Let me know how that works out for you guys.

What on earth got into Ernest to put up this thread is what I'm wondering. Smiley

I wanted something other than the deluge of hyper-partisan primary-related threads with posters mindlessly battling over minutiae the average voter is unlikely to ever worry about.

I must admit, I had not anticipated it turning into what it has become.

I don't see why Republicans criticizes her for this, it is the equivalency of criticizing Laura Bush for trying to get kids to read.

Laura Bush was a snob for wanting people to read. Just as Barack Obama is a snob for wanting people to go to college.
