United States v. Cruikshank!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Cruikshank

The Court found, apparently contrary to the intent of the writers of the Fourteenth Amendment, that the Bill of Rights only applies to the federal government, and not to the States.

This is in 1875, after the ratification of the fourteenth article of amendment.

The fourteenth amendment should be read literally, in my opinion, regardless of what it was intended to do.
