http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/20/mitt-romney-fundraising-fec-reports_n_1289758.html

Romney raised $6.4 million in January (compared to $9.8 million in January 2008), while spending a whopping $18.7 million. Only 18 percent of his donors were small donors. His Super PAC raised $6.6 million, but spent $13.9 million.

His campaign spending is basically unsustainable. If he doesn't win Michigan, he'll be in deep trouble.

Of course he can just start donating unlimited amounts of money to himself. Though the optics of him literally using his own wealth to buy an election may not be super great.

If we take the 43 Million $ raised by the 4 candidates and their SuperPACs into context with Obama's number of 29 Million $, there seems to be a big money advantage for the Republicans.

Especially if we also take into account the Karl Rove group of "American Crossroads", which raised more than 5 Million $ in January and has more than 20 Million $ cash-on-hand left.

18.777.000$ - spent
7.678.000$ - cash-on-hand at the end of January

With 6+ Million raised - he's still got >13 million to burn for February.

His Super PAC has ammo for 2+ months.

Santorum has only 2.1 million, and could spend at most around 6 million this month.

Total max spending available February, assuming that receipts keep up with last month:

Santorum - 8.5 million
Romney - 36 million
Ron Paul - 9.0 million
Gingrich - 20 million

Romney has about as much as everyone else combined.

he 'loaned' over $44.6M to himself last time around, no reason to think he won't do it again if he has no other options.

At least Santorum is helping to put a dent in Romney's funds.  Can he really spend 'unlimited' amounts of his own money?  He's only worth about 220 million, right?  In the general that won't be such a big factor.. (or excuse my ignorance, is he allowed to use his own money in the general?).

I'm sure that he is allowed unless he opts for public financing which he obviously would not.  even then he would be allowed to use x amount.  and yes estimates of his net worth are about $200-250M.

Obama has accumulated a lot of money though, so he should be fine.  Also, not all conservative fundraising and none of Paul's fundraising will go to Romney if he wins.

Yeah, and the big donors will now also contribute to Obama's SuperPACs in big numbers because of the policy change.

And then there are also the big unions and pro-Democratic groups which have a ton of money.

I was just reading a post by Nate Silver on this issue and one of the comments was hilarious.

Mr. Romney needs a private equity firm to come in and buy out his campaign. It can borrow a lot of money to shore up the campaign, streamline it, lay people off, consolidate operations, and tighten things right up! I'm sure Mr. Romney will think of this solution soon!

Will Romney refuse public funding? Obama 2008 is the only candidate since it was established to do so.

How many months before the GE do you have to apply for public funding ?

Public funding would be about 80 million $ I guess and I think you can spend it after the convention, so that would amount to 40 million $ for September and October.

Currently, Romney raises about 10 millions per month, so it wouldn't be a bad idea. But what if he accepts it ? He cannot loan himself any of his money, right ?

He's doing fine and isn't at risk of running out of money: he can just keep donating hundreds of millions of dollars to his own campaign, and rely on th Koch brothers, Wall Street Money, and his SuperPAC to carry him through the general election. The real story here is that Santorum's shoestring campaign is giving him a run for his money.
