Does anyone else experience the strange one hour to two hour phenomena that occurs after a long nap where you feel disconnected from everything, have really poor reflexes and mental thought processes? I hate this.

One time after waking up from a nap I spent twenty minutes clicking on my mouse and banging on my keyboard and switching my monitor on and off. It turned out that nothing was happening because I hadn't turned on the computer. I don't like taking naps.

On an unrelated note, I approve of your username/avatar.

My thought process with naps goes like this: if I'm really sleep deprived and take one, I'll be able to focus on this homework way better.

Then it ends up taking me hours to be in the right mental state to do homework. Shout out to the Thalamus for being a dick.

I used to have that problem (and I guess still do for a few seconds), but working mids for 12 years kind of fixed that.  It seems to be worse if you wake up at twilight..."ahhhh, it's 6.....I wonder if it's pm or am".

I don't do well with napping, my brain can't shut down during the day... it's usually when I'm VERY tired and I just end up sleeping rather than napping.

Yup.  Unless I take a nap that's only two hours long at the very most, I normally feel worse than before.

Yup, I think more than 30min - 1hr the body's sleep rhythms take over and so you will feel much worse.

Indeed...if you wake up in the middle of one of your circadian rhythms you're screwed for an hour or so.

Three hours post-wakeup and I still feel atrocious. This Philosophy take-home test can blow me.

Not post-nap, but when I'm mid-nap, I sleep talk and sleep-action.  I've spit on people, and yelled stuff while napping.

Just this afternoon when I woke up from a pretty decent nap my first thought was "oh sh*t! I slept past my classes!"
And then I looked at my cellphone and saw the time and date.

Relief is an understatement.

Not really, but something that does happen to me is anything that happened in that day before the nap is kind of forgotten and feels distant, like it happened a lot longer ago than the night before when I take up. Kind of strange.

Semi-unrelated: When I woke up this morning, I felt really, really refreshed, despite having slept for six hours. It was more than usual, but it was still kind of strange.

One time I got two hours of sleep and felt amazing when I woke up. REM cycles confuse me.

If you time it right it's possible to sleep for only four hours a day and be as energized as if you sleep for eight, there's a name for the type of sleep cycle. Of course to use it you have to both: 1-Not have any real commitments or employment and 2-Go through hell for a couple weeks adjusting to it.

OK, now its official.  I can't hate you.

I take naps every day that I have significant works to do - as in days that I have to get up before noon.  I then repair to a secret location sometime around 3 or 4 pm and sleep for about 3 hours!

And yes, it causes me to feel incredibly goofy, but I don't mind that a bit.  It is immediately solved by an espresso, however, this re-starts the cycle and I stay up till five in the morning.  Ha ha!

Test Question: what is the source of the 'problem' here? <hint - the answer will reveal your character and politics>

I'm guessing the problem is a society that forces you to get up before noon and work?

I've never been a napper. I get bored with it too quickly. I can only nap if I'm really, really, really tired and just collapses involuntarily. Which happens, but very rarely.

Most of the time I can only sleep in a bed, at night and only for something like 7-8 hours. Shorter than that if I had any alcohol.

Close enough for some points, but not the mot juste, young Gustaf.

How can you 'get bored with it'?  You're unconscious, if you're doing it right.  Perhaps you don't understand what we mean by 'nap' - you're actually asleep, you see.

Obviously, I mean that I get bored before I can fall asleep. And then I get restless and can't sleep and have to get up and do something.

I've never managed to actually take a nap. I can only sleep at night.

Even weirder: when you don't sleep at all your body will get a massive energy boost around dawn whcih can easily last well into the afternoon before fatigue kicks in again.

This usually lasts for a minute or two at most for me.
