My favorite is Paths to Glory. I also like King of Masks, Anatomy of a Murder, Braveheart, and Forrest Gump, but they're not ranked.

Generic, I know:

1. The Godfather, Part II
2. The Godfather, Part I
3. Citizen Kane
4. Casablanca
5. Metropolis

Below are some assorted Japanese movies, as well as some American classics (Goodfellas, 2001, et cetera). There are a lot of movies I have never seen, however. A friend of mine has seen about 2000 ones.

By the way, some of you have questionable taste. No offense Jake, but The Notebook is shamelessly manipulative... And Sanchez, Step Brothers at number six!? What movie were you watching?

Completely random order:

Rear Window
Election
L'année dernière à Marienbad
The Third Man
8 1/2

Feel like I'm forgetting all sorts of important movies I liked better than those, though.

I don't buy the story put forward in JFK, but that doesn't matter.

FTR - I believe there are some fishy elements... but nothing to the scale of Stone's story.

I clearly like different things in my movies than you do. Do you have any complaints in particular?

1. Children of Men
2. The Tree of Life
3. Days of Heaven
4. Gangs of New York
5. Warrior

My list making abilities are horrible. I tend to just enjoy films and then not watch them for years. Only the top four films impacted me enough to watch them multiple times within a year.

In no particular order:

Goodbye, Lenin!
Back To The Future (I usually watch the whole trilogy together, so it's like a single movie to me.)
Being John Malkovich
Seven
Time Bandits

I tend to like romantic movies, or at least movies with strong romantic plots involved, which is part of the reason why Moulin Rouge is my favorite movie.

Now, I admit having some kind of weird obsession with Moulin Rouge! when it came out. But the romance was a very small part of why I liked it.

Best sequence BY FAR!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhjR2XLIUuU

Yeah, I think the thing that made Moulin Rouge stand out the most to me was that I identified really strongly with Christian's romantic idealism. It is also the only musical I've ever enjoyed, and that sequence you linked is quite epic. Plus, the main song from that movie is sort of our song for my girlfriend and me.

I think is probably my favourite 'song'... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8oM5PhHO88I

I never liked musicals... still can't believe it's been nearly 11 years since it came out! But I certainly liked the unconventional nature of MR, frenetic editing, colour etc etc - Luhrmann wanted to create a world that would give the viewer an idea of what the Moulin Rouge would have been like, based on our sensibilities.
