The Seventh Seal, The Three Colours Trilogy, A Short Film About Killing, Il Divo, Citizen Kane.

The list might change by tomorrow. Don't ask me to given an order.

Immediately I'm tempted, for example, to put Once Upon A Time In America on there, somewhere.

I've got to think some of your are either joking (Step Brothers?BASEketball?Speed Racer?) or trying to be cool by putting down important, but not particularly great movies (Citizen Kane...really?).

Now, so as not to be the kind of asshat that mocks but then don't put his own list up for mockery.....

Airplane
Holy Grail
Mallrats
12 Angry Men
and lets say.....Die Hard

Here comes the defense of Citizen Kane!

realisticidealist has impressively bad taste.

Tongue

I clearly like different things in my movies than you do. Do you have any complaints in particular?

YOU LIKE THE NOTEBOOK GET OFF THIS PLANET

I tend to like romantic movies, or at least movies with strong romantic plots involved, which is part of the reason why Moulin Rouge is my favorite movie.

Now, I admit having some kind of weird obsession with Moulin Rouge! when it came out. But the romance was a very small part of why I liked it.

Best sequence BY FAR!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhjR2XLIUuU

Yeah, I think the thing that made Moulin Rouge stand out the most to me was that I identified really strongly with Christian's romantic idealism. It is also the only musical I've ever enjoyed, and that sequence you linked is quite epic. Plus, the main song from that movie is sort of my girlfriend and I's song.

I's?

I was typing quickly on an internet forum. No need to get pedantic.

And furthermore, there's a difference between my favorite movies and the 'best' movies. I'm sorry if I don't live up to your eruditic standards.

I call Citizen Kane the "peer pressure masterpiece"... I honestly think it's incredibly overrated.

LOVE Airplane!! (soft spot as it was my parent's first date)

I've got to think some of your are either joking (Speed Racer?)

It's a really big guilty pleasure of mine, and I think it was entirely underrated when it was released to theaters. While it got a bit kiddish at times, the unique style worked really well for the story, and I find that the visuals and plot of the last race are an extremely well done representations of the emotions involved. I've rarely seen a better executed climax than in Speed Racer. It was also the only really well done anime adaptation I've seen, and I think they really got at the soul of the series and of its type of anime in general.

Well, to be fair, I've never seen it (and I loved Speed Racer when I was 7).

Movies, economics, football, and dogs are probably the only things I like more than politics. My favorite movies are very different from what I consider to be the best movies of all-time. In fact, a lot of my favorite movies are not even close to being among the best movies of all-time. With that in mind, here is my list of favorites from one through five:

In no particular order:

Goodbye, Lenin!
Back To The Future (I usually watch the whole trilogy together, so it's like a single movie to me.)
Being John Malkovich
Seven
Time Bandits

Make like a tree and get the hell out of here.

In no particular order (currently):

Forrest Gump
Gladiator
Back to the Future (Same Reasoning as Joe)
Lord of the Rings (Similar reasoning)
Braveheart
Close Encounters
Indiana Jones (1 and 3)
Man on Fire
Top Gun
Highlander

Others: Witness for the Prosecution, Anatomy of a Murder, Crimson Tide, Hunt for Red October, The Mission, Name of the Rose, Star Wars (eps 4-6), The Rock

Citizen Kane is a great movie.

I think Al, Beet and Belgian have made the best lists so far. Myself, I can't really make those kind of lists. So just going off randomly and in no particular order...

Citizen Kane
Paths of Glory
Stolen Kisses
Wild Strawberries
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Went for mix of genres, countries and eras in lack of better criteria...but it's pretty much impossible to make a decent list limited to only 5 entries.

Misconceptions, my friend. Misconceptions. Do you know I've never seen Sixteen Candles or St. Elmo's Fire?

I just watched The Secret of My Success for the first time the other day.

Here comes the defense of Citizen Kane!

It's an intelligent and complex film that makes certain important (and very serious) points without labouring them or treating its audience as utter idiots. Also, and for what little my opinion is worth, the acting is wonderful. The direction, shooting, editing and so on are all fantastic, and far more inventive than people sometimes remember. It has a gloriously theatrical feel quite often, and I think that's a good thing. It's an excellent piece of dramatic writing and is also often hilarious.

It's no doubt one of the most important films ever made (if not the most important film ever made).  Many aspects of the modern movie were created for the film.  Even considering how old it is, it is still a very watchable movie.  It just seems to me (and I'm not alone...it's not like I came up with this on my own) that there has been a lot of movies since that have done everything Citizen Kane did and did them better.

It's a good film and I probably shouldn't judge people that put it in their top 5...but I do Wink
