I think the premise of this question is false on two levels.

Firstly, didn't most of the weapons the rebels have come from army units defecting rather than normal citizens having weapons?

Secondly, they obviously didn't have resources to overthrow the government but needed outside support. If one wants to have lax gun control as a way to overthrow the government one would need to extend the right to bear arms to the right to have fighter jets. And that seems dubious.
