And why does no one here care compared to the fuss over NY a while back?

The difference in hooplah might be because NY state was very suspenseful. Passing it required the conversion of 1 key Republican State Senator, who just 18 months prior had voted against gay marriage, while sobbing, clearly knowing his decision was immoral and made purely out of political expediency.

Washington, it seems, passed this rather smoothly, no?

In other news, most of the states with the most open gay couples/residents are moving quickly towards legalizing gay marriage.

Florida and Georgia will probably be among the few very-gay states that keep gay marriage illegal for a long time.

not just suspense but because it is New York.  anything in NY gets inflated.  it's the capital of the financial empire.  even when it snows it's all "omg it's snowing in NYC!"  it's just automatically more important.

Truth. It's especially annoying when its some minor weather-related event that basically becomes the national news for the day.

the mainstream and liberal media is all based out of NYC in case you didn't notice.  All the evening newscasts are filmed in new york city.  Heck even fox news and bill o'reilly film in new york city.  No one cares about washington state, its practically canada with more rain.

For those who don't want to read the entire Washington thread, can someone describe the districts of the Dems and Repubs who crossed over?

In the House, D crossovers:
Steve Kirby (Tacoma) - Not exactly the most socially liberal city out there, lots of socon suburbs
Mark Miloscia (Federal Way) - Exurban Seattle/Tacoma
Chris Hurst (Enumclaw) - Exurban Seattle/Tacoma

R crossovers:
Glenn Anderson (Fall City) - Eastside King County
Maureen Walsh (Walla Walla) - Lots of latte libs in Walla Walla

In the city itself there are a fair few; in the surrounding areas there are a lot of crazy religious types though (Seventh Day Adventists in College Place, for example).

Tacoma is sort of like Washington's Tujunga or Bakersfield.  So no surprise.

From that description, Tacoma sounds more like Sacramento than anywhere else in California.

Well from what I've heard, it's full of people who are addicted to crack and have Confederate flags on the backs of their trucks.

Washington is one of the most liberal and most conservative states.

People there tend to fall on the extreme ends of the spectrum. So yeah, lots of confederate flags and yoga studios, gun-nuts and vegans...

While I could see Western Oregon and Western Washington teaming up into a new state, I think Eastern Oregon would have reservations about teaming up with Eastern Washington with all those not blatantly conservative areas.

I think the more correct way to identify Walla Walla would be college town.

I don't know. I've been there a few times and Whitman doesn't really take up that much of the city. The downtown area just feels very Seattle-lite to me.

There is also Walla Walla University, but it's probably not as politically active.

I think Bend, OR is the most liberal city east of the crest though. Spokane might be more democratic, but I think it's more of the union/working class democrat while Bend is more of a latte liberal kind(because of construction boom/rich people).(Can't find data for the cities, but both of their counties voted by a razor thin margin for McCain).

That's because it's a conservative Seventh-Day Adventist university in a super conservative Mormon-esque hegemony of a town (College Place).
