Two Mormons distrusted by the conservative base on one ticket?

Nope.

Absolutely not, but he might give Huntsman a spot in his Cabinet. I think he would make a fine Secretary of State, especially with regards to relations with the Chinese (And Romney may need a pro-Chinese Secretary of State considering his plans for tariffs on China until they let their currency float and crack down on intellectual property theft). Otherwise, Huntsman needs to run for Governor again or maybe see if he can get Hatch to retire so he can take over his seat in the Senate? Surely Hatch is not serious about running for re-election yet again at nearly 80 years of age...

Considering that Thurmond ran and won while in his 90s, I see no reason Hatch would necessarily decide that he is too old to run.

No, he's going to try to appeal to the base through his VP candidate like McCain.

But honestly, I think Huntsman would be a fine choice. This election is about the economy and will be won by whoever manages to persuade independent voters that they're the best to handle the economy. In that regard, a "serious" Romney/Huntsman ticket actually looks really strong. Sure socons aren't gonna be happy, but chances are they're gonna show up anyway to give Obama the boot.

Probably not, it would be funny to throw the social conservatives under the bus though to get the independent vote out.

I lol'd but Huntsman is definitely not a practicing Mormon. One of his daughters was married at an Episcopalian church, he drinks, he swears and his background would make him an outcast of the church. He's a Jack Mormon.
