This is for Democrats and D-leaning indies; I'll make the Republican one next.

The scenario: Obama wins a second term against Mitt Romney and John Thune; Democrats hold the Senate with a net loss of one seat while gaining seats in but failing to take the house. The second term is marked by relatively stable recovery; Democrats were able to reduce the quota for the filibuster from 60 to 55, managing to pass the American Jobs act and the DREAM Act, among others. The 2014 midterms meant little--Democrats again suffered a net Senate loss of one, while Republicans made small House gains; however, Democrats picked up gubernatorial seats in several Midwestern and Southern states. Unemployment is at 6.3% by November 2016, and the US is mostly out of Afghanistan other than training forces. Iran is still saber-rattling but hasn't tried anything yet.

Most Democrats are running on a basic continuation of Obama's policies, but each has their own proposed additions and platforms.

No Biden or Clinton? Even if neither of them run, I expect that someone directly tied to the Obama administration will make an attempt.

Anyway, granting the terms of the hypothetical, either Governor Cuomo or Governor Carcetti. I think that nominating another Senator would be a mistake.

Andrew Cuomo would be my choice. Though if Brian Schweitzer is in, I'd probably pick him.

Martin O' Malley is my top choice, naturally.

Kucinich, but I voted for Kaine because I like him a lot and he'd have much greater chances of winning the general.  I'd support pretty much any one of these people in the general except for Manchin.  Schweitzer would also make a great candidate.

I'm kind of sad that so many people are supporting the right-winger.

Of the 8 listed options, which one is not a right-winger besides Kucinich?

Why is Gov. Martin O'Malley getting so few votes, even among Democrats?

My second choice would be Hickenlooper because his name is like something out of a Marx Brothers film.

I hope Cory Booker's Governor of New Jersey by 2016, although it's probably too early for him to run.

Hickenlooper is my #1 choice at the moment, I'm not happy at all about his pro-fracking stance but I'm a big fan of most everything else he's done.  Martin O'Malley would be a strong second from this list.

Cuomo is a horrible choice and I'd definitely work against him in the primary.  Gutting transit options on the proposed new Tappan Zee and cutting the MTA's payroll tax is absolutely inexcusable in my book.  He has simply no clue on infrastructure issues, so screw him.

It's not going to happen, of course, but I'd actually be pretty pleased with a Joe Biden run: he gets it on infrastructure/energy/environment issues in a way that even many Dems don't.
