Most of the soviet countries like the USSR and other eastern bloc nations, had a final communist election, where though the Communists won a majority, the opposition had made significant inroads.

What would said election look like if a Soviet American (USSA) were to have collapsed in the 90s

Something like that though I'm not sure about the shades (Minnesota?). All states, Republican and Democrat, have some sort of reliance on the Federal Government that could make them solidly communist in this version of the USA. I'm wondering where the freedom lovers would be. NH, it seems, but where else? Out West in the small states where despite national parks and federal funding, there's less love of regulation and such? It'd also be a great place for exiles to flee to after acts of terrorism in the thriving communist metropolis of New York.

Alaska would be Siberia, and that would be sweet.

Remember the Communists drew their last breaths from right-wing socially conservative farmers.

I also gave areas that I saw as having an "Independent streak" or "huge cities" a boost for the opposition.

Actually, a Communist America would be USAS (Union of Socialist American States).

Something like that I think :

Assuming the Commie era started somewhere in the 1920-40s, the Southwest would probably be its diehard core. I'd also see it easily making inroads in the deep south and in the manufacturing belt. The main areas of oppositions would be the most urbanized ones : CA, FL and the east.

I'm assuming that the nation has been wracked by chaos, inefficiency, etc, enough so that the country's practically falling apart.  As such, the 80,84,88 numbers are used and the presence of regional separation is present.

Red is the old communists of course, blue is the traditional conservatives, with the greens being a bit more progressive.  Grey represents a regional or independence candidate.
