A perfectly reasonable position, if you're not a Republican running for president in primary season.

Stupid unforced error in context.

(FWIW, I think Obama is a socialist, but that's not the point of this thread, is it?)

Yeah, because he totally advocates a centrally-planned economy.

Yeah, because he totally advocates a centrally-planned economy.

It was informative reading that post because I wasn't actually aware that The Globalizer is apparently a massive hack.

Obama's policies are anti-American and pro-Europe? And Europe is bad, right? Good lord.

(FWIW, I think Obama is a socialist, but that's not the point of this thread, is it?)

Wow! I don't even self-identify as socialist and I'm a member of the NDP. It might be a boundary issue though - I probably become a pinko communist hippie the moment I step into American territory if Obama's considered a socialist by your definition.

Obama isn't a socialist.  Even the most conservative politicians in Western/Northern Europe are to the left of him.  Same thing goes for the Democratic Party.  I'll bet even the most progressive members of the Demoncratic Party aren't even up to par with most European or Canadian leftists.

America is a conservative country, really.

I can't with certainty about Europe, but I'm pretty sure it's the case though, but there are elected members of the Democratic Party who are more to the left of some Liberal and maybe even some New Democratic MPs in Canada.

I mean, come on. The former Speaker of the House, and current Minority Leader, is the lovely Nancy Pelosi, who I know is on par or even surpasses quite a bit of the current New Democratic caucus.

This is the opposite of a gaffe.  This will be used to play into a narrative that Romney is moderate and reasonable

What matters it the conservative media, they will continue to throw around communism/socialism/fascism as things that are essentially equal

Oh for God's sakes the drama on this forum. It isn't a gaffe. It's incorrect to call Obama a socialist. A big spending liberal democrat is however an accurate description that Romney used.

Obama does see a large role for central economic planning, though it is not total.

Wow how has this thread actually gone anywhere.

The real story if anything isn't a "HUGE" gaffe, but instead how someone could be so clueless about primaries, the electorate, and politics in general to create a thread as dumb and pointless as this and then have the audacity to put "huge" in all caps.

What is even more interesting yet is that their are few posters actually taking this thread seriously.

The only sane answer is, "Who gives a flying ****?" Nobody that's who!

P.S. Kudos to those that gave the much deserved sarcasm to the OP.

Uninformative to me, however, as you're just reconfirming the same obvious truth you make clear in.  EVERY.  SINGLE.  POST.

Obama advocates for a top-down redistributive society.  How, exactly, is that not socialism?  He's practically the archetype.  The only blip is that he's not in a country receptive to his ideals, so he falls back to the next best thing, corporatist crony capitalism.

Do you have any evidence that he "advocates for a top-down redistributive society"? More to the point, what does "top-down redistributive" mean in terms of real policies?

If Obama is a socialist, so is Romney. In fact, so is probably every prominent Republican politician except Ron Paul.

We've got to stop the ridiculous memes that supporting a top tax rate of 30% makes you a laissez-faire poor-hating market fundamentalist, while supporting a top tax rate of 40% makes you a socialistic rich-envying class warrior. Isn't it obvious they're both just different degrees of a mixed economy?

Eisenhower kept the rate at 90%, so he was probably far to the left of Karl Marx.

Why am I not surprised ?

I'd just like to note that there is a fair bit of European right which is to the right of a lot of Democrats.

People often seem to misunderstand the nature of electoral politics, median voters and all that stuff.

Back then, there were enough loopholes (probably intentional) that I doubt you could find anyone who paid so much as 60% of that.
