I see jmfcst is on board. Sorry for the Cain Train pun. Anyway, back to the point: is it time to turn to Newt? Perry decided to abandon his campaign tonight and Cain seems a little preoccupied these days. While I'd love to see Santorum step into the role of the "Anti Romney," Newt seems far better positioned to do so.

I can't believe it's happening but I might just have to support the guy.

Have you considered supporting President Barack Obama?

Republicans have always *liked* Newt, but have never seen him as presidential material.  That may change when he is up against Mitt Romney.

Phil, your continued refusal to purchase a ticket for a sleeper cabin in the Cain Train has been noted in my Racism Journal.

Republicans have also always gotten a very filtered view of Newt from the media. Most are realizing he isn't the same guy they were envisioning in their heads.

You make Newt Gingrich sound like the friend-zoned old friend of the GOP, constantly hoping that after the latest loser threw up on her, she'd realize that he was what she was looking for the whole time...

NEWT:

'Cause he shouts slogans
I make speeches
He's pimp-hatting
And I'm on Greek beaches
Dreaming about the day when you might wake up
And find that what you're looking for has been here the whole time

Santorum showed in his 30 seconds of time tonight that he's clearly the most complete candidate the GOP has to offer: center-right, religious, tall, and charismatic.  It's strange that he's still being ignored.

He wouldn't win the general, but he wouldn't get totally destroyed.

As I've said from the beginning, I'm always going to support Rick. If he's on the ballot when the Pennsylvania primary rolls around, I'll vote for him. I said this even when Christie was considering a run and we all know how badly I wanted that. That being said, Santorum isn't gaining traction so not only do I need a back up but my back up is sort of my top choice. I still think Santorum could become a force but it isn't happening right now.

I didn't see the debate. In fact, I don't think I've seen the last three debates. I'm glad he did well...unless you're being sarcastic.

As I've said before: The anti-Romney candidate du jour has thus far been an outsider candidate (even Perry, in an anti-Beltway image kind of way) and bona fide connections to the far-right tea party wing. Newt is firmly established as a Washington insider in voter's minds. At least as much as Romney (the "East Coast Establshment"). On the second point, Newt may've been the embodiment of hard-line conservatism in the 80s and 90's, but by today's Tea Party standards he hardly stands out.

In short, I doubt Gingrich has the anti-establishment and hard right cred to become the consensus choice of the tea party wing, which is exactly what any successful challenger to Mitt needs to do. Mitt may win the nomination simply by default.

Romney has not committed suicide or shot off his own foot, hence he is the front runner.

The ballot for President in 2012 looks, well, tragic in a gong show sort of way.

Not really, just I've become depressingly desperate.  Newt has some major flaws:

1) screwed up personal life
2) very arrogant
3) doesn't smile enough

if Newt stumbles, I'm contemplating kidnapping Romney and giving him a lobotomy.  And I also think Perry damaged Romney badly in the NV debate.

I'm surprised you would turn to Newt, Phil. Santorum is at least honest. Newt, not so much. He promised us paradise before.

Sure, if the Pubbies wish to cede the election to Obama, it most certainly is time to push the Newt button on themselves.

Seriously.  What kind of a reaction is that from Santorum's remaining supporter when Perry and Cain look to be imploding in parallel?  How hard can it be to destroy Gingrich to leave one less alternative to Santorum?  I'm surprised Santorum held his fire on Gingrich last night.

I'm in the same boat. There's a reason why I said, "I can't believe I'm saying this..." about turning to Newt.

Wow. You people would support Obama before you resorted to Romney.

A tea party friend of mine has said just that. This friend (who was on the Cain Train back in March so he is a good bellweather) explains that Romney is little different than Obama and will be another big spender like Bush and cant be trusted. Therefore it is better to let Obama have 4 more years (which he predicts will be a huge disaster) to bring rise to Chris Christie or another true champion. The thought being that it would be like Carter 1980 where the country would finally see the need for a real conservative.

I thought it was crazy talk, until Joe Scarborough started saying he is hearing the same stuff from his conservative friends. And then Red State also jumped in to. And don't forget Ann Colter's "if Chris Christie doesn't run we will nominate Romney and we will lose"

Coulter has seen the light, and is quite the fan of Mittens now actually.
