For me:

John Street
Nancy Pelosi
Zell Miller
Jim McGreevey (not because of the gay scandal, but beforehand)
Ed Rendell (to a lesser extent)
Robert Byrd
Gary Condit

Since I don't count Zell Miller as a Democrat, I'll say Joe Lieberman, Jesse Jackson and Collin Peterson.

Arlen Specter
Lincoln Chafee
Olympia Snowe
Jack Kelly (Philadelphia City Councilman)
Ellen Bard (soon to be former State Rep. and Congressional candidate)

There are more but those are the Big 5 that I can think of off the top of my head.

I like Pelosi, but I agree she should not be leader. A good one would be Sherrod Brown from Ohio.

Zell Miller and Robert Byrd are Democrats I'd gladly give to the Republicans.

Zell Miller was, by far, the NASTIEST of the speakers at the Republican National Convention.  He made me want hop on the midnight train to Georgia just so I could pelt him with spitballs.  I can't believe why he didn't switch parties like many other far-right-wing Democrats.

I think Robert Byrd is a disgrace to Democrats and to West Virginia.  West Virginians didn't like Gore or Kerry, but they can't get enough of Robert Byrd, who epitomizes what's wrong with Congress and the country.  He's one of the biggest pork barrel politicians, and his constituents keep voting for him because he "brings home the bacon".  Although I am a liberal Democrat, I would vote for Byrd's opponent if I lived in West Virginia, even a right-wing opponent.  At least a freshman Senator can't screw up the country as much as the powerful Byrd does.

And in spite of Robert Byrd's unnecessary water projects, agency headquarters relocated to West Virginia, and highways that go nowhere (all named after him, of course), West Virginia is STILL one of the poorest states.

Susan Collins
Olympia Snowe
Tom Coburn
Jim DeMint
George Pataki
Donald Rumsfeld
Condi Rice
Chris Shays

Anyone who is too extreme I don't like.

And anyone who is too New York Times touchy feely I don't like.  By that I mean anyone who just jumps on whatever bandwagon (like the Intelligence Reform Bill) the NYT and the rest of the media is whoring for at the moment.  I wish I had a more deft way of saying it, maybe someone who knows what i mean can think of one for me, but its the people like Snowe and Collins who just are so in with the coktail party ideology and style.

I must admit that I'm surprised that you dislike Rumsfeld and Rice so much.

As for me, my choice would be comprised mostly of racists like Jesse Jackson and John Street.

In what way? Reading up on Senate procedural rules isn't normally thought of as a particulary sane thing to do, but surely you'd prefer a cantankerous old git to some rubber stamping clone who "votes the right way"?

In what way has he "Screwed up the country" exactly?

But a lot less poor than when he became Senator. He's done a lot of good work for WV.

Regarding Byrd, a Senator does have a responsiblity to his constituents to do what's best for them. The great majority of members of Congress of both parties try to get projects for their home states and districts; it only makes sense that you would try to help out the people whom you represent and who voted for you.

That being said, there certainly should be some degree of responsibility to the country as a whole, as well, but from a pure political standpoint, leaving moral considerations aside, there is no reason for a politician to care what anyone thinks outside of their state or district.

Of course, I also disagree with Americans, or residents of any nation, who say "Screw what the rest of the world thinks", for the same moral reasons, that we should do what's best for everybody and at least consider the opinions of everybody, not just our own, even though politically a President or Prime Minister has no responsiblity to anyone but residents of his/her own country.

So a Senator who says "Screw the rest of the country, I'm voting for what's best for my state" is following the same philosophy, just on a smaller scale.

Robert Byrd epitomizes where the $6 trillion national debt comes from.  Everyone thinks that his/her own senators and representatives are knights in shining armor while condemning the rest as the scum of the earth.  Their own senators and representatives bring home the bacon while the rest plunder the US Treasury of borrowed money to pander to the home state/district and get re-elected.  Senators and representatives are expected to bring home funding for local projects that benefit constituents.  To the constituents, it doesn't matter how much merit these projects have, so long as they benefit from them.  Then there are the corporate special interests that the politicians have to pander to.

In other words, everyone wants something for nothing.  Everyone wants smaller government but only if the cuts come from everyone else's pet programs.  Unfortunately, everybody is somebody else to somebody else.  A senator or representative who does cut a program alienates an important constituent (no matter how flaky the program) and provides fodder for the next election season, but nobody else cares, so that is a big hit to his/her reputation.  Everyone hates taxes.  So there's a rush to increase spending without increasing taxes, and that blows up the national debt.

Harry Browne.  - He lead us to crushing defeat twice (the 2nd time worse than the first) and yet seems to sill have a major following.
Aaron Russo - This guy is a complete nutcase.  I can't believe he was a serious contender for the nomination.
Jacob G. Hornberger - another nutcase.  We are so lucky the LP didn't endorce him when he ran for Senate.

Zell Miller - The ultimate DINO and a senile old fart.

Robert Byrd - A senile old fart who has been a drag on the party for too many years.  He is actually the man who blocked the Clinton healthcare package in '93.  You Republicans should love him.
