-Howard Baker (Nixon, 1972)
-James L Buckley (Reagan, 1988)

Nixon wanted to put Byrd on the court at one point because he though he would be a conservative thorn in the courts' side. It is still disputed whether it was meant as a joke or serious.

Byrd wouldn never accept such thing. He was totally consumed with his Senate work.

More realistic scenario of Republican President appointing conservative Democrat to the bench is Reagan nominating Howell Heflin. Reagan was serious about that, but Heflin didn't want a nomination.

Yet, Heflin was former state Supreme Court Chief Justice and now that "in love" with Senate as Byrd.

It was never really considered too much. In Nixons words, Byrd was a "very vain man with limited ability"..but I always wondered how would a Constitutionalist and Southener like Byrd do on the SCOTUS.
