I didn't know that Eurostat now has crime statistics for most of Europe. The latest numbers are from 2008, the 2009 numbers should be out in November.

Take a look:

Crimes recorded by the police - Total crime

Crimes recorded by the police - Homicide

Prison population

Number of police officers

Very interesting if we compare the 2008 data for the EU-27 with the US:

EU-27: 6500 homicides, population 500 million, rate per 100.000 = 1.3 homicides

US: 16.500 homicides, population 304 million, rate per 100.000 = 5.4 homicides

Made a small chart and ranked it according to the murder rate:

Plus the map:

4 shades:

0-1/100.000
1-2/100.000
2-3/100.000
3+/100.000

Nice to see that we're not the worst at something in the EU for a change.
Also, an interesting correlation I've noticed in the murder rate in the Baltic states: the higher the Russian percentage of population, the lower the murder rate.

Here's Canada (incl. a good map and the numbers):

Prince Edward Island is orange because it was murder-less in 2010.

Alcoholism, poverty, no work and an ongoing loss of traditional lifestyle for the Indigenous peoples there. Therefore they are depressed and kill each other.

All those are issues, but remember, we're talking about 10 people.

off topic, but "super jails" has nothing to do with increasing crime.

It should be noted that while the US crime rate has been higher than Europe for decades, it has been falling fast of late:

The US is approaching 1950's level crime rates on some indicators, which would be an all-time low.

At least the Republicans cannot run on the "Black man elected President in 2008, crime went up"-platform next year.
