No, they (the pilots) can't hear you anyway.  If it's done at all, It only  makes sense after "hairy" landings.

I've only noticed that in Europe, and that too only a few times.

Generally no, but I've seen it as well.  This is especially common on flights from the US to the Caribbean, especially in winter.  But I do sometimes hoot and holler and whistle.

I thought only Russians did that. It's like Americans clapping at the end of movies. Weird.

People who do that are uneducated idiots, and it's terribly annoying.

No.

I've no opinion of it. Clapping at the end of a movie sounds even stranger.
Then again, the amount of clapping expected in indie theatres here in Germany is the strangest.

I thought only Russians did that. It's like Americans clapping at the end of movies. Weird.

I don't think the clapping of the hands is limited to any particular ethnicity.  Maybe those times I noticed it (typically at the end of a particularly bouncy flight or when a plane touches down in a particularly warm and beautiful destination) I just happened to be on flights with lots of Russians and didn't realize it.  I'll try to pay attention next time that happens and see whether only certain groups are clapping.

Is it only weird when Americans clap at the end of movies?  I find it weird when anyone claps at the end of movies.  I have noticed that phenomenon as well.  Particularly in Boston, in New York, and in parts of Latin America, although haven't noticed it in other areas, and I didn't pay particular attention to the ethnicity of the clappers.  If that happens, I don't usually join in the clapping, but I exploit the diversion to holler or whistle or cough.

Now that I think about it, I usually don't clap.  Many times when everyone else is clapping (promotions announced, a seminar speaker gets finished, a children's choir program finishes, etc.)  I look around and hear everyone else clapping and I usually use that noise cover to fart or fiddle with my camera, or do whatever noisy thing I'd been wanting to do but couldn't.
