Apparently they're not comfortable coming out as atheists as they fear it would affect their electoral chances because Americans don't like atheists: http://atheism.about.com/od/atheistbigotryprejudice/a/AtheistSurveys.htm

Who do you think these 27 members are and what districts do you predict would hold them? Any senators?

I don't know why they're being such p*ssies about it, and don't come out. If their districts elected them in the first place, is it really going to make much of a difference?

Why do you assume atheists are liberals, or were elected in liberal districts?

I edited that out because it sounded stupid for me to say that. Tongue They're not.

Only twenty seven? Though I suppose it depends on the terminology, perhaps.

I'm sure there are lots of closeted irreligious folk in Congress, though I doubt this organization has any clue what they're talking about.

I wonder if more people would vote against a Scientologist than would vote against a Muslim, a gay, or an atheist?

I would also like to know how many people would vote against a bisexual or transgender individual, or if those terms, for the purposes of the poll, were categorized under the umbrella term "gay".

Bisexual>Gay>Muslim>Scientologist>Atheist>Transgender

I know many people who fully support gay rights and have many gay friends, and even some gays, who can't be near a transgendered person without experiencing physical revulsion.

Of course, all this obscures the real question: Would Herman Cain put a Scientologist in his cabinet?

That first poll I cited was the first one I could find at the time and it was from 1999. Just found the most recent one from 2011 and sad to say it's no better: http://www.gallup.com/poll/148100/hesitant-support-mormon-2012.aspx
